This was the highlight of my trip to the Mammoth Lakes area. There are several places you can park and explore the dome. Turn off the main highway and follow the signs to find the first parking area. It is a dirt road but any...More

As geologists we travel the planet looking for cool stuff. Obsidian Dome took us by surprise. While the obsidian on offer may not match that of southern Oregon's Newberry Crater, Obsidian Dome is an easy drive of no more than 10 minutes on a very...More

A relatively easy hike with views of the many types of rocks formed in a volcanic flow. Definitely recommended

Was a steep hike. The parking area is very small and one entrance and exit. There is a hike up a hill to get to the obsidian. Great views! Hot no shade, we did see some not melted snow! Toatally worth it!!!

The road to get to Obsidian Dome is unpaved for the most part. Best to go with 4WD. It's not a must do, but it is interesting.

We enjoyed an unplanned side trip to obsidian dome. About 2.7 mi from the highway, the road is unimproved. We made the trip easily in a small SUV. We saw obsidian and petrified wood. It was a fun and interesting trip

Obsidian Dome is impressive if you love volcanoes and geology. However, the dirt road was too much for our little Jetta and we turned around before we got all the way to the area where you can climb. What we did see was interesting. Bring...More
