Neighbourhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My family had tickets to see a show at Madison Square Garden on a Saturday night and we decided to go into the city early to go to church and dinner before the show. We looked up churches in the area on the internet and found St. Francis of Assisi along with a few others. We're glad we selected this church. The inside of the church is beautiful and the altar is amazing. The cantor that sang had such a fantastic voice. Everything was breath taking. It's close to MSG and Penn station. An excellent choice

My wife and I stopped in to visit Church of St. Francis of Assisi in January 2020. It is a beautiful church with a beautiful altar. There is a beautiful mosaic above the altar. The church is located close to Penn Station.

This beautiful church is over 125 years old. It is tucked away and hidden amongst the many buildings on 31st Street and just a short walk from Penn Station and 6th Avenue. It is well worth the visit, the architecture and stunning.

This used to be my church in NYC but now that I have moved to Florida its sad I can't be there anymore so was only too happy to get back recently. Incredibly warm people; super service and most of all all of the shrines that you can go to directly to pray or just meditate.

I am a very devout Catholic and am extremely saddened by the state of the Church today and the resultant departure of many of the faithful. This point was driven home by the situation at this lovely church. Not only was the service attended by maybe 50 people in a place that can easily hold 1,000, but the sign at the front informed the worshippers that from now on the weekday Masses would be held only in the small lower church. A magnificent church such as this, which is easily one of the most beautiful in all of NYC, and they can't even afford to keep the lights on in the big upstairs main church for weekday services. So very very sad.

St Francis of Assisi renders a very poignant celebration of the Risen Christ during its Easter vigil. Choir is the best as well as the songs. Priests give good, relevant sermons and parishioners are very friendly

Church was very beautiful and everyone that worked there were very friendly. There is not much to say about this church, only it was in walking distance from where I stayed.

This church is an oasis of peace in the middle of tall buildings and busy traffic. In the upper church, on either side of the nave, are a statue of St. Jude and one of St. Anthony which were sculpted from wood by the artist Armand LaMontagne. They came to New York by way of the Franciscan Chapel of St Francis in Providence, RI. The chapel was closed to make way for a hotel, but fortunately, these beautiful statues were received in their new home. I never visit NYC without visiting them.

Just noticed the entrance while walking along 31st St. Went in initially to lower level and then to upper level. Both well attended by locals and in their own way lovely. Simple arrangements in lower blown away by superb decoration of upper church. Magnificent decorations. Free food for the homeless very popular,
