Good, but not a game changer

Good vibes, fun speakeasy style and a good laugh, but not the most amazing cocktails in the world. Advise trying the Girl Friday cocktail if you're unsure :)

So, mixed feelings on this one. Finding the place is fun and certainly adds to the mystique, the decor is great, definitely a speakeasy feel, and the drinks in coffee cups is fun. Unfortunately, that's about as good as it gets. The bartender was incredibly rude, the bathrooms are rather disgusting, and for some incomprehensible reason, an authentic 20's prohibition... More

I was sooooo looking forward to visiting this bar on our trip to New York. It was actually the first thing I googled when we decided to go to the USA. I have visited the speak easy ( Coal and Cedar) in Newcastle Australia and absolutely love that place but I was sooo disappointed with the New York toy shop... More

Horrible. One of the barman stole my money right in front of me. Manager did nothing about it. I wanted him to check one of the 8 cameras that could prove this crime, he didn't. WATCH OUT FOR YOUR WALLETS!!

This place is generally CROWDED. My advice is to reserve a table ahead of time so you can properly relax and enjoy what makes The Back Room different than any other crowded bar in NYC. This bar was an original speakeasy. Reading up on it's history before you go will really enhance the experience for you and make the place... More

Try to find this place. Shhhhh. Can't tell you where it is. But if you are astute, and you know the address, maybe you will notice the bouncer outside of this great place. Drop down to basement level, crawl through the tunnel, the 'war zone' and you will emerge into an authentic speakeasy, circa 1920. Great ambiance. Lots of great... More

I loved this place - it was the last stop on a speakeasy tour and we elected to stay here long after the tour disbanded. As an original speakeasy it's hard to find, and when you get in it's opulently decorated and the atmosphere is something special. There's dancing, great traditional music, lovely cocktails. I'd definitely revisit if I get... More

Starting with the clandestine alley to the entryway, this felt like stepping back in time. The interior is relatively small, and had a dark/gritty feel. It was very laid back, not as formal as some of the nearby speakeasies. We were there on a Monday with live jazz music, and a handful of people were dancing. It didn't look like... More

This was neat. It's a prohibition style pub, with an entrance set back from the sidewalk through an alley. Be sure to give the cab driver the street address and look for the small gate with the address: 102 Norfolk. Were it not for a bouncer, we'd not have noticed it. They serve beer bottles tucked inside paper bags and... More

Used to be a nice place for a drink, but we had a quite bad experience last time we went here. The bartender was quite rude and impolite and the drinks he made were not good at all. We left the drinks unfinished went somewhere else.

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.
