Small, busy part of the city
This small, incredibly active neighborhood is a shopping hub for the city and houses one of NYC's most iconic places: the Macy's Flagship Store with its glorious window displays (come for Christmas!). It's easy for this neighborhood to blend into Times Square, so it's a bit less well-known as a distinct neighborhood, but it's still absolutely worth a visit for its own sake. Parts of the bordering streets are closed to vehicles so pedestrians can sit at tables to enjoy a meal from one of the cafés or to merely people-watch.

    Very square!!
I know all tourists go to Times Square but I happen to be a native of the city and I think it is very overrated!! I am not trying to start a tourism coup and get overthrown but I am saying it is very crowded!! I happen to enjoy walking 8 blocks from the crowd and hanging out here!! I went here today with my ramen friend in NY who I’ve mentioned a few times!! We played a prank on his parents and said he left his phone in the ramen room which is actually an inside joke that we created inside of the restaurant we ate at!! I know what an inside joke is and the last line was also a joke!! We had to sit down and explain the joke to his parents because they fell for it and we sat here!! We then enjoyed a waffle which we split in half and enjoyed!! You all should come here!!

Enjoyable Spot to Grab a Table and Take in the City
Herald Square, where you will find Macy's flagship store, is a pleasant spot to grab an outdoor table and enjoy a coffee while taking in the pulse of the city. It is a recognizable spot if you ever watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on tv. It is located on a closed off, pedestrianized section of Broadway. The Empire State Building is right around the corner. Not a place to make a special trip but certainly a good spot to take a break if in the area visiting the Empire State Building or Macy's.

I always felt this area has been very underrated in the city. My favorite part is that it’s a really nice place to eat, with all the tables and chairs. I also love that it’s a great resting point for walking around, especially when doing the NYC holiday tour. I do enjoy using this area for photography as well, it’s a great spot!

We did go to Macy's, which is the iconic presence at this crossroads. We were surprised that there were so many people shopping, nice to see post-Covid. The city has made a wise choice of blocking traffic on some of the odd portions of Broadway and setting up tables and chairs, which are used by people to rest or to eat. Makes the area more lively.

I had a waffle and coffee and enjoyed the early morning views and statue. Felt a bit like Europe! Good place to start the day and the park was clean, secure, and well maintained.

PROS
• Famous because of the song
• So centrally located in midtown Manhattan
* Adjacent to Empire State Building and Macy’s and on Broadway
• Seats and tables in pedestrian areas

CONS
• Not much else of tourist interest here

“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… on my path of walking excursion of 26,308 steps of midtown Manhattan. Others had informed me that there was not much notable there, and they were correct.

TIPS
See it if you are there and pass by it. Certainly do not make a special trip to be there.

Herald Square has a small park and part of the street closed to traffic. In the portion of Broadway were tables and chairs and pedestrian walkways. A nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee after shopping at Macy's.

Herald Square is opposite to Greeley Square Park. Both are small parks that sit in the middle of Manhattan. Flowers and seating . Both nice.

If you look at Google Maps it correct describes Herald Square as a "compact plaza" which is highly accurate. There is a small pedestrian area, then a very small green space with a statue and then 6th Ave. That's really it.

Macy's has announced a makeover of the area to make it much more pedestrian friendly and hopefully turn it into a real point of interest. In my opinion, the makeover is a great idea. Right now it is an average 3 star green space in midtown.
