Neighbourhood: Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.

I saw the theatrical recreation of James Joyce's "The Dead 1904" in an immersive theater experience including a sit down dinner with the actors at the American Irish Historical Society. It was the perfect venue for the interactive play, with the rooms set up as parlors, dining rooms and bedrooms. Its a small building but well worth the trip. This show is golden and they do it every year during November and December. A wonderful experience in a great venue. Next year I'll stop across the street at the Met first!

Saw the small museum of famous Irish-Americans located in a historic old mansion on 5th Avenue. Just a few rooms, and during my visit most of the rooms were still being set up for a NYC jewelry exhibit schedule to open later in October. You may want to wait until then to visit.

I’m not sure what the American Irish Historical Society looks like on a “normal” day but at night, during a wedding reception, with its surfaces and tables laden with flower arrangements and candles, with delicious hors d’oeuvres being served, this place was magical. I’d love to go back and spend more time examining the exhibits and books one day. Looking out its beautiful front windows across the street to the just-lit Metropolitan Museum of Art as the sun went down, a spring breeze wafting in, was something my family won’t forget.

My daughter and I visited the American-Irish Historical as part of a performance by the Irish Repertory Theater on Saturday December10th. Because of the performance the building was decorated for Christmas and it was hard to tell what was a prop and what was part of the Society -- paintings on the wall were certainly part of the historic mansion and all the tables for dinner were certainly for the performance, but the bed on the 3rd floor was which of the two?. The mansion at 991 5th Ave was in beautiful shape and looks almost exactly as it did after a renovation in 1911! I was told, before the event, that not only was there an elevator (i have a bad knee) but that the elevator was original and from the early 1900's. The building and its appointment were stunning and I would love to return for a tour when an even is not in session, the place is amazing!

The building is a small (by Manhattan) building nestled between far more imposing and modern buildings. We called into this building on the off chance someone might answer, the man who did was extremely helpful, he works there a librarian. He showed us around the magnificent building and explained a bit about the building's history.
We saw an original 1916 Proclamation, a death-mask of Wolfe Tone, a faded Irish Tricolour from 1916 and we got to examine the library and walk around the magnificent Gilded-Age (I think!) mansion.
I don't remember our guide's name, sadly, but this chance visit was one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended, especially to Irish people.

I went on a tour today and was amazed at how many historic Irish artifacts that they had on the premises. Our tour guide was conducted by Sara which I found her very knowledgeable and gracious.I really enjoyed our day at the Irish Historical Society and look forward to returning for future events.Membership is very reasonable for access to so much Irish history.

Gorgeous building and right across from the Met and Central Park. If you're in the city looking for a cool place to check out, definitely stop by. You should call ahead to make an appointment and then someone will show you around. I'm Irish American and was in the area, I called and asked if I could stop by in about an hour and the girl said no problem. When I arrived she welcomed my 2 friends and I then gave us a tour of the building. She was young and pretty new, but told us about the history of the society as well as the actual building itself which was built around 1900 I think. Didn't take long since it's your typical brownstone, but is mostly all original to the building, was recently restored, and has a great view of 5th Ave.

If you are either living or visiting New York, try to visit the New York Historical Society to see the incredible Audubon exibit currently on view - only a large sample of their more than 450 + print collection!! A wonderful review of his artistry. Also of note, is part of a private collection (some 500 pieces out of 35,000 collected) of German toy trains, stations and bridges. Quite a show stopper!!
Please see separate review of Caffe Storico at the Society buildings.
