Thanks for visiting Big Apple Jazz Tours! Since 1997 we have been on the front lines of the underground New York City jazz scene - taking small groups down into the basements and alleyways where live jazz still thrives in neighborhood nightclubs from Harlem to Greenwich Village. Legendary players and clubs as well.

All live music and transportation costs are included in the tour price. Our jazz tours take place in Manhattan for the most part, but private tours to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx can be arranged.

Our goal is to offer the most intimate, small group tours available to Harlem and Greenwich Village neighborhood nightclubs and juke joints. We also provide insight into the Big Apple jazz scene as it has evolved over the past hundred years.

Consider hiring Gordon Polatnick to take you on a private tour throughout the city during the day or night to experience the city's many intriguing neighborhoods at your pace and focusing on your interests.

We did the Harlem Jazz Tour on a Friday night - and it was just perfect. Gordon is a great host. He knows Jazz and the Jazz Clubs worth to go to. We really enjoyed the evening. We visited three clubs. All different. But all cool. Especially the Showmans! Important: We always felt safe! Summary: Nice people, nice tour, an... More

I had a formidable Jazz night with Gordon. The experience to visit different Jazz bars during the tour and learn a lot of local historical nuances from Gordon 20+ years of Jazz in NYC is ASTONISHING. I really recommend it.

We were delighted with our Jazz Tour of Harlem with Gordon. We went in January so it was a bit easier to book a tour with just a few days notice. I strongly suggest you book ahead of time. Gordon met us right on time and navigated us through the subway system from Columbus Circle. He even accompanied us back... More

What a night we had with Amanda on the Big Apple Jazz Tour of Harlem! I surprised my husband with this tour on the weekend of his birthday, and it definitely made the occasion celebratory. The first thing that impressed me was how diligent Amanda was in reaching out (by email and phone) to those on the tour so that... More

We enjoyed a Sunday evening Jazz tour in Harlem with Gordon who has lived there for 20 years and who's knowledge of jazz both past and present was extensive and very interesting. 6 of us were met in the shopping center at Columbus Circle -very easy to find - at 5.30pm and were taken via the Subway up to Harlem.Once... Amanda met us in Manhattan and guided our way up to Harlem on the subway. We visited three terrific jazz joints, everything set up for us to enjoy a set of good music along with great food and drink. Amanda is not only a tour guide, she's part of the entertainment. At times, she got up on stage and sang... More

We thoroughly enjoyed 2 of our 3 stops at jazz joints in Harlem. The first stop, Red Rooster, had great music downstairs and just ok food, but it was a very yuppie-ish place; not the old time atmosphere we expected. The second stop, Showmans, was the best place. It is a small, but comfortable old time jazz bar; felt like... More

We, that is my musician son and I, together with our American hosts, enjoyed a fantastic time on our Harlem Juke Joint tour. The three venues each offered different experiences; accessible, enjoyable jazz, food to suit the night and locations which we certainly wouldn't have seen without Gordon's knowledge. We felt welcomed in each place and heard a range of... More

We chose a private tour thinking we would have an exciting, informative tour. While Gordon was friendly, it seemed we were just there to pay for his entry fees and drinks while he took photos of musicians. At the first club we wasted 30 minutes waiting for the music to start (we would have come later if we had been... More

Please be assured that I am taking your critique to heart and will make certain that my future private tour guests benefit from your words. I strive and usually succeed in creating tailored experiences that far exceed expectations. Clearly, on the night of your tour, I missed the mark completely and you feel aggrieved. I am glad you enjoyed the... More

Gordon is a living encyclopaedia of the history of Jazz in New York. His tours will take you to traditional Jazz venues as well as interesting, off beat bars that you would never find on your own. I have been on a Big Apple Jazz tour on three of my four visits to New York and I always learn something... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
