About
The Intrepid Museum celebrates the people and technological innovations that have shaped, and continue to shape, our world. It is an immersive and fun place where history and STEM are showcased through marvels such as the world’s first space shuttle; the world’s fastest commercial airliner; a nuclear-weapons-carrying submarine; and dozens of military aircraft, including a supersonic spy plane, all displayed in and around the historic landmark aircraft carrier, Intrepid.

- Daniel LApex, North Carolina635 contributionsAwesome ship, nicest staffShoutout to the nicest old navy retiree that was working there, from the USS Shangri-La. Was willing to explain all the workings of the carrier and his own career working on another one, and was an absolutely hilarious dude. Just by meeting him, it made the already cool experience an amazing one.Visited October 2022Written 13 December 2022

Fantastic to see so many well preserved aircraft and also to understand how a Air Carrier works and how people lived there... Listen to the veterans talking about their experience was fantastic and emotional ! Take your time to talk with all of them... Will enrich a lot your visit.Visited December 2022Written 2 March 2023
- Micheltravel925 contributionsReally interestingGood idea to do this excursion. How many times do you get the chance to visit an aircraftcarrier, a submarine and a spcashuttle on one day. Lots of history, mu advice, buy tickets on like to skip the cue, including a tick for a 3d movie, very impressive, and a simulator if you want, less impressive. Arrive early, cues fur the sub can be long. If you have a ticket with timed entrance ie at 10, you will be the first to be in the sub. Lots of guide to tell about the ships too.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 July 2023

- Steph SBristol, United Kingdom25 contributionsGreat visit on a sunny afternoonReally great museum showcasing the USS Intrepid, there is also an array of aircraft for viewing, a submarine (which sadly we didn’t have time to do), the Enterprise space shuttle, among others. Unfortunately you do have to pay extra for some of the attractions but overall there’s much information and lots to see. There are also some cool models built entirely from Lego which I’m a huge fan of!Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- A Midlife AdventureDursley, United Kingdom1,313 contributionsI wouldn’t revisit. It was ok but everything is a little old ?.I didn’t do this museum when I visited ten years ago because I didn’t feel my teenagers would enjoy it but succumbed to visiting this time with my husband. He loved it and wandered around the various decks inspecting everything on display. I however was bored after an hour or so . We recently visited Kennedy Space Station so the exhibits there far outweighed the Space Shuttle here. I quite enjoyed the aircraft on the flight deck although they are all rather old. The exhibit on Vietnam was interesting with some astounding facts and the below decks information sparked by interest but the rest of museum I found was full of a lot of written information which didn’t capture my interest or imagination.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- BigBirdEdinburghLivingston, United Kingdom285 contributionsVery good day outI chose this for my 50th birthday treat! I loved it and my wife said she really enjoyed it too. Some of the aircraft are a bit dated but still good to see and enjoyable. The craft on the main deck are really good as is the space shuttle experience. Some space on the lower deck which shows possible improvements to come but plenty to keep you entertained. We almost passed on the submarine tour but glad we didn’t - it was very interesting. A shout out to all the volunteers - some really interesting veterans with brilliant stories, make sure you speaking them and get them talking!! It’s worth it!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- Priti PTampa, Florida9 contributionsIncredible family museumIncredible family museum to visit! My 8 year old son couldn’t get enough of the planes on the upper deck and enjoyed sitting in the captain’s seat inside. The submarine was also cool but had a line to get inside. I’d suggest checking the weather before heading here because much of it is outside on the river which can get unpleasant when rainy and/or windy.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 October 2023

The aircraft carrier itself is very impressive, and so are the planes, the space shuttle and the submarine. We enjoyed our visit very much. The exhebitions in the museum are very informative and interesting, and you could spend an entire day there. Eventhough you have to pay extra for it, you should not miss out on the 3D experience of travelling into space in the space shuttle area. It's so much fun!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 November 2023

If you have an interest in aviation then this is definitely the place for you. Interesting aircraft including planes and helicopters, the space shuttle and fascinating history of the aircraft carrier are all here along with a submarine that held nuclear weapons. Shame sometimes the Concorde is not available to see.

A great example of USA s Past armed forces together with .
A Space shuttle exhibition. What an exhibit for all the family to explore. Kept in great condition . You do need to be fairly mobile especially if you go in the submarine.
Great value a must do if you've never been in a sub or warship.

Awe inspiring. Very informative signage. Easy to follow the routes throughout the ship. Seeing a real space shuttle is amazing as was going into the submarine. Getting to lie in a sailor’s bed was cool as was sitting in the cockpit of a Mercury space capsule.
Downside is at the ticket window there is no veterans’ discount yet online there is. To me that’s false advertising.

A lot of fun. Staff is friendly and there are a lot of things to see.
I would love if there was a more interactive alternative though. Would’ve loved to be able to sit in one of the airplane cockpits for example.

Really enjoyed this visit - we went in the main to see the Space Shuttle, but had not realised quite how much else there was to see and do. Didn’t leave enough time - could do with a good three/four hours to see everything.

Visiting the Intrepid Museum isn’t just for those addicted to military history & aviation geeks.
Intrepid Museum has something to entertain & dare I say help educate the whole family in definitely something they didn’t know before the visit.
Getting there early is a must for anyone wanting to explore the USS Growler submarine, be warned this is popular and a little wait can be expected if you don’t get to this quickly. It’s also a tight space to be explored so if you don’t get on in small spaces think twice, but they do let you experience the fit of a few of the hatches before you head on the climb through the submarine.
The flight deck has aircraft exhibits spaced out well with plenty of room to walk and snap your photographs. All be it the helicopters could be better placed/spaced out for the limited number there.
The USS Enterprise is well positioned within its own housing with a great backstory around her, this is bound to blow any buddy astronauts mind. A great exhibit.
If you time it right the aircraft lift still works and you can catch a lift between the flight deck and hangar deck, this is really worth trying to time if right for.
When walking around the hangar deck, you can still smell the history of Intrepid, and her working life which is really great.
There’s also interactive stations in this area for younger family members (and the big kids).
If visiting New York & whether you’re fully into aviation & military history or not, Intrepid Museum is a must on your visit list, and is in a great location to explore New York further along the Hudson River.

Does the Museum participate in the ASTC Passport Program? The list on the ASTC website includes the Intrepid but the Intrepid website makes no mention of this partnership. Thank you.

I know there was a Star Trek exhibition in 2016. Is any of that left at the museum? Specifically, I'm wondering if the Galileo is still there?
Does general admission include a tour of the actual ship?

With our tickets we could walk around the ship freely and not have to wait for a grouped tour. Just walk around at your own leisure

Yes. I was not particularly keen o go to this attraction but my husband is a plane enthusiast. There was plenty to keep my interest. Your children would enjoy the submarine & seeing Concorde. Think there were interactive activities for children but didn't really register these as we were on our own. Perhaps take food with you as food in the cafe was dire! There is a food market which includes a good Italian restaurant about 4 minutes walk away, over the main highway. Have fun.

Is it worth paying skip the line or are the queues ok?
dk1219
4 contributions
We faced queues only at some particular attraction, such as entry to the submarine Growler due to limited space on it - therefore entry control is a must, and you will not skip it.
Another was at GFORCE flight simulator. but because they are only two and a lot of visitors wants to try it.
One more was at Space Shuttle Pavilion on VR trip, but because it took too long to wait, we decided not to try.
It was on July 4.
