I loved the Alma Thomas show. This museum is just the right size if you want to see incredible art without being overwhelmed. The gift shop is a must-stop if you want great gifts for yourself or friends.

This museum is a little gem to be found in the heart of Harlem. They have changing exhibitions and a (rather small) permanent collection. It's small but well-selected. A great advantage of this museum is that it is not crowded like many other NYC art museums (so you can really enjoy the art) and has long opening hours (on some... More

Maybe I had high expectations about this museum so I felt so down when I visited. I was expecting something that would represent the history of art or just art in the black community or even Harlem but nope. It is very small and it is something that a neighborhood would put together. It does not have the level a... More

The painter Alma Thomas left a legacy of stunningly uplifting art, which celebrates observation, interpretation and, quite simply, happiness. Not to be missed!!!!!!!!!!!! Note, admission is free on Sundays. A HUGE congratulations to this museum for recognizing and presenting the work of this gifted artist.

Small and interesting cultural exhibition of black artists makes this a perfect outing from the downtown Manhatten. Apollo teatre nearby. In the vibriant Harlem. Also great shopping nearby with both the GAP and Banana Republic outlet stores.

I arrived for a visit on a Tuesday. The Studio was closed, unfortunately. It's open from Thursday through to Sunday, but they are brilliant in pointing you towards the other attractions in the area. If you arrive on a day that they are open. Definitely pop in. They are worth the visit. As I'm still in the USA, I'm still... More

I was so impressed with this museum. I'm a former New Yorker and never visited it when I lived here. I was lucky enough to have a chance to check it out on a recent trip to the city, and I'm so glad I did. The exhibits were all topical and introduced me to art I never would have seen... More

Limited Space, current exhibitions. There is a very helpful free magazine at the reception desk – make sure you look at it before looking at the art on display, because the background articles are useful in understanding the art and the artists.

The museum volunteer passing out flyers was 'the hook.' I immediately walked in and spent several hours enjoying the museum. My favorite part was the photo exhibit, and I enjoyed the museum bookstore. I recommend supporting Harlem businesses!
