St. Marks is one of the funkiest neighborhoods in NYC. A short walk from Greenwich Village or take the subway to Astor Place. Great local pubs and restaurants and funky shops. Lots of locals - not at all touristy like Times Square. Get off the beaten path and check out his East Village neighborhood!

So much history, art and culture to experience in this area. We found out a lot about the area and St Marks Place from the Lower East Side History Project walks that they do in the area - very educational. The history of the area in the Kleindeutschland period is fascinating, then leading through so many changes through the Beatnik... More

I only saw one chain (Chipoltle) amongst all of the local stores, eateries and attractions. There is still a hint of the rebel atmosphere that you think of with the East Village, but alas, you can see that this place too is becoming a high-rent neighborhood that will soon have Starbucks on every corner. But for now, it is still... More

I am a frequent visitor to St Marks Place. There are a number of stores and restaurants that my family really likes here. It is no longer the scene of counter culture and progressive thinking it once was, but still worth a look. I would encourage visitors to learn about the history of this street and nearby blocks. It is... More

NY's Lower East Side preserves it's history, beautiful architecture and artworks on the buildings. Look very carefully at each building. Great places to shop for rock n roll attire too.

The place used to be known for it's punk rockers. Nowadays, St. Mark's is known for the many Japanese restaurants that run up and down it. It's not the same as it once was. Punks are harder to find, but there is still a lot of heart to this East Village hot spot. There are still some decent tattoo shops... More

If I was to live in Manhattan, this is the area I would choose. East Village. St. Mark's is where all of the punk bands found themselves. Tons of clothing stores and shops in St. Mark's Place.

We were told to check out East Village by a friend who lives in Brooklyn. It was one of my favorite parts of Manhattan! We are in our early twenties and loved the really vibrant streets, full of quirky shops, market stalls, restaurants, hookah bars and regular bars! There are also lots of tattoo parlors if you are thinking about... More

As a native NYer there are few areas I have not either worked in or explored. I have been to St. Mark's Pl. at every stage of my life, yet even now as a grandma I absolutely loved it once again. It's just a few blocks from the #6 (Lexington Ave. line) with fabulous buildings to look at along the... More

Found myself quite attracted to the multitude of restaurants, bars & vintage shopping found all along the street. Maybe not as jaded as other travellers/commentators but I truly enjoyed walking around the street daily as I head back to my rented room just 5 mins away ...
