As you expect it's overcrowded and commercialed but this is what you see as the big New York attraction so have a walk through, pick up the souvenirs and if it isn't too your taste walk a few blocks to a quiter area.

Driving through NYC can be a nightmare, it is very busy with Taxies and emergency vehicles. One option is to get the subway to Time Square, there is a lot to see there. Also you can get one of the Guided Bus Tours. Parking is quite expensive. I was staying in NYC so I walked everywhere. Perhaps park on the outskirts maybe an option, and use the subway.
