A wonderful beach to hang out on! We found lots of great shells and saw ponies almost the whole time we were there (4+ hours). There is a bathroom but it's a HIKE. Lots to see and explore but you need to bring everything including water, chairs, and sunscreen. Also would suggest a change of clothes or bathing suits even... More

We visited mid-April. We chose the West end of the island and came with 3 kids under 10. I read other reviews and packed accordingly. We brought a lunch, and bags for shells. Next time I would bring the kids drawstring backpack style bags for their shells, and a backpack each for my husband and I for supplies. We brought... More

This was my first trip to Shackleford Banks Island, and I loved it! I could not believe the incredible seashells washed up on the beach just lying there waiting to be picked up. There were great big seashells....the kind you only seem to find for purchase at the store! I came back home with about a dozen huge, perfectly formed... More

This island is by far the best I have visited when it comes to NC beaches and outer bank islands. I used Island Express Ferry to get there and back. It's affordable and a must see place. If you like shelling then this place is for you.

We spent about four hours on the banks which was about perfect. We did get to see the wild ponies but you do have to walk around a bit to find them sometimes. There were also A lot of shells on the beach but it would've been better to come on a weekday and take the first boat over to... More

I would def. recommend anyone going out to Shackleford Island/banks!! Bring your own lunch, carry in/out all food and trash for the benefit of the wild horses. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this trip. Go out with the vendor who is US park Services approved to go 'on' the island, they are the only ones authorized to get you 'on' the island.... More

We visited the park early in the morning on a cold and windy day. Advise against that. Horses were not out in the cold and the ferry would not come back to get us earlier than scheduled. Shelling was poor on the island as well. Everything we found was broken. Horses ultimately came out before we left. Note to self:... More

If you love beach combing...fishing...site seeing...pleasure boating...etc....Go...Go...Go!!!! Camp sites, cabins, or just day trippers...such a pristine area. Beautiful water...clean beaches. Just do a little research before you go to be properly equipped for your adventure.

We took a small ferrry from Harkers Island on our way to the lighthouse and the guide took us around Shackleford Banks to see all the horses and gave us some history lessons. :) It's absolutely beautiful.

Took the boat to this undeveloped island on a cool sunny day. The island is undeveloped that means no buildings or shops. The boat returns every 90 minutes. You can choose to stay on the island for the day or for just a short visit. The island is well known for the number and variety of seashells as well as... More
