Takes a good 40 mins to get to the ruins and then another 40 mins to go back up. They loved it but defiantlely go before it starts getting dark. It gets cold fast.

It is very steep on the way down and all the way I kept thinking that it was going to be murder coming back up and that I didn't have enough sunlight to make it the whole way around. It isn't too strenuous; I'd call...More

This trail which is a 2.5 mile round trip is the only trail to the canyon floor that’s free. Just bring plenty of water. Of course it’s switchbacks on the way down and back, but it’s the 600 feel of elevation gain that makes the...More

This is the only free hiking trail down into the canyon. The walk isn’t too bad and well worth the time. The walk back out of the canyon is a little strenuous. We had to stop and rest because we got so hot and it...More

I think this is the only trail that visitors can use without a guide to get to the bottom of the canyon floor and to White House Ruins. Beginning at 6,000 feet elevation, it is a 2.5 mile round trip descending 600 ft to the...More

We walked the trail on a cool October morning. Only downside was angle of sun when we got to the White House Ruins that made pictures less than perfet. But this is well worth the effort. The trail is laid out well and for those...More

This is the only public access to the Canyon. Very scenic all the way down (unfortunately, you've got to come back up, but it's not bad at all). Much of the trail was carved into the sandstone rock wall. You also go through a couple...More

This trail begins at the parking lot of the White House View Lookout. It is well marked and very suitable for any traveller who is in reasonable shape. The trail descends to the canyon floor, and then follows the river to where you can get...More

This hike, the only hike allowed without permit in Canyon de Chelly, is a gem. We started our hike in late afternoon, and the light radiating from the canyon walls just before sunset was a spectacle and a testament to the incredibly beauty that Canyon...More

The trail is relatively easy but quite vertical. We saw people with strollers and I need to say - that was a very bad idea. This is not a good trail for most very small children unless you are prepared to carry them back up.

I completely agree with bsa819's comment. On your first day, you could do the White House Ruins hike in the morning. The sun from the southeast will provide nice warm light on the ruins. They are still beautiful in the... More

It can be as high as 1,000 ft. but not where you go down. It is well worth the trip and this coming from a double hip replacement person ( April & September of 2009 ).
