About
COVID-19 UPDATE: We are currently open for retail shopping and Private Experiences! About Us: A visit to the Old Town Model Railroad Depot will take you back in time to the 1950's where you will see trains from that era travel over a 2,000 sqft layout featuring a city at night with over 100 buildings with lights and flashing neon signs. Continuing on your journey you will pass a large farm, country town, beautiful mountain range, a large lake and dam with trestles traversing over a large gorge.

Nostalgia at its finest
Sep 2020
I used to visit this museum with my grandma when I was a child, over 30 years ago. I recently visited, and because it was close to closing it was only $2 to visit, which is a fair price for this smaller intimate attraction.

This attraction is full of amazing works of moving art, that were hand crafted and have been cared for lovingly over the past 30 years since my last visit.

I enjoyed visiting, and will visit again next time I am in town.

model Railroad

My husband is into model railroads, but I like anything miniature. So this was interesting for both of us. It is amazing how big these displays are! THere is also a Toy Train room that is more fun, especially for kids as it incorporates Mater from CARS, plus other fun things. For anyone (young or old) interested in model trains, this is a nice museum to visit.

I had a great experience with all staff associated with this location. I must say that Art, Elia, Josh and Mr. Jose were by far superb! They made me feel welcomed and a special guest at all times! These gentlemen greet you with a smile and professionalism time and time again! I'd recommend this location to anyone visiting San Diego (Old Town). Thanks guys!

A must for every big kid!

This venue evokes lots of childhood memories and is pure nostalgia.

It is an ‘O’ gauge railway and the detail is exquisite. Friendly staff are there to assist and the place relies on donations. If I had more time I would have happily stayed and watched mesmerised by this fascinating model.

Is an amazing place. A must see hidden gem in San Diego. They don´t have admission fee but donations are well accepted. The visit takes you less than an hour. Also you can shop fabulous things.

We popped in by chance. Was amazed at the size and all the detail invovled. A definite must see when in Old Town.

Amazing layout - you'll love it!
Oct 2019
During a visit to Old Town SHP, I had to stop by here - it's a short walk from the SHP. Wow, I'm glad I did! The depot is free (feel free to leave donation on way out) and I consider that to be a true gift considering the expanse and detailing of this layout! It is divided into day and night sections, and I'm not sure which one I like better - both are highly detailed, and I don't believe I've seen a layout this size with greater detail. The layout(s) in the Balboa Park museum are much larger, but for actual detail throughout an entire layout, this is the best I've seen! The buildings, streets, people, vehicles, roads, crossings, water features, and everything else I could list are amazing. Some people prefer "operation" over "realism," but this is more my style of modeling in its truest sense. In fact, I'm going to be quiet now and let you check out the photos and see what I mean - the folks here are friendly as heck, too, and happy to chat or answer questions. Give them a visit, and catch the true spirit of scale model railroading.

Adorable little place!

Entry is free, they do ask for donations. Small, but set up very well. We really enjoyed snapping photos as the trains zipped through the rooms!

On its way to the grave
Sep 2019 • Couples
If you havent seen this you are missing out on something pretty amazing. A whole community depicted in the 1950s with all sorts of fun things for the young and old alike. From the businesses that were to the billboards with familiar as well as fun catchy sayings. It is easy to spend an hour or more taking in the creativity of this well layed out model train community.

Sad thing is at the end of September this little gem will cease to exist. Due to age and failing health the proprietors and creators of this awsome exhibit can no longer maintain it and it will be shutting down and boxed up.

So if you are in the area of old town San Diego in the next few weeks make it a priority to go by the model train depot just down the street from the Coyote Cafe.
