About
Once an infamous gambling den and brothel, the historic Gaslamp Quarter has since transformed into a lively neighborhood. Here, you can stroll down 5th avenue, catch a film at the Balboa Theater, or visit the gallery of Chuck Jones, creator of many Looney Tunes and Warner Bros characters. Plan your visit on the weekend to catch the Gaslamp Artisan Market. There are also many themed events held throughout the year like the Gaslamp Music and Art Festival in May.
Explore the quarter on a tour of San Diego, which often includes a stop here. Travelers recommend the San Diego hop-on-hop-off trolley tour as a great option. – Tripadvisor

- MelindaBowling Green, Kentucky147 contributionsSafe as can be!I’ve read recent reviews that this area is dangerous. I was there two days and never ever felt unsafe. They have cool shops, great food and I would highly recommend going there! Homeless stay around Petco Park, so as long as you don’t go over there you have zero worries! I was alone and never had the first homeless person approach me! Go enjoy urself it’s a part of San Diego history!Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2023
- David E16 contributionsFunThis was a great place with a lot of restaurants and bars. Our hotel was located right in the middle of it (The Pendry, please see my review of the hotel, spoiler it was great). We always felt safe and there were many options for food and late night drinks. A must see, although at night I probably wouldn’t bring young children.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2023
- WandaBothell, Washington3 contributionsNice visit with no issuesMy husband and I visited the Gaslamp District together for the first time since pre-pandemic and it was fun and safe. There were a couple of encampments on the fringes of the Gaslamp District but we saw very few homeless and none of what had previously been posted here. Maybe the city cleaned it up…I don’t know. But our experience was only positive. The district is still recovering from the pandemic so many businesses are shuttered but just as many or more are open. We easily found places to visit and places to eat/drink. If you are wondering if you should visit, you should. This is still a great place!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023

We came here once back in 2015 and it was a lot of fun… energetic night life with lots of decent eateries and bars. So, when we came this year, we stopped in during the day for lunch and noticed LOTS of homeless people walking all over and about a block of their tents and personal stuff nearby. Not very good for tourists, since this is mostly a tourist destination. Sure hope they can clean this up, soon!

Gaslamp needs to be cleaned up ASAP. I feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Mentally ill, screaming, naked, actively urinating, unstable people everywhere.

It smelled of urine and it has an aggressive homeless population. I didn’t feel
safe. This is not family friendly area. The restaurants were subpar and overpriced based on the ambiance and less than friendly service.

We didn't really know much about the Gaslamp Quarter before we visited, I just knew that we should probably take a look at it, so we wandered down there one evening and although there isn't an obvious attraction to gravitate towards, it felt a very nice place to hang out. Maybe I'm a bit blinkered but I didn't see any druggies like other people have talked about, maybe it gets like that later at night, we were there early evening.
There are so many bars and restaurants to choose from, along with a smattering of shops - shops are more towards the convention center end of the street. Some of the restaurants were pretty high end and looked really nice, but we weren't too hungry so found a pizza by the slice place, there's something for everyone's taste along this street.

I enjoyed the Gaslamp square as it a live and dynamic place. There are variety of restaurants and all you will need from stuff to foods. High recommend stying in the same area as it’s the center of San Diego.

I am currently at the restaurant. I ordered waffles the machine is broken, so that removes approximately 20% of their menu. Mind you CVS is across the street, so they can go get one. Anyway, not a big deal. I then order French toast and fried chicken. I get the FT no chicken. The waitress never even comes back to check on my meal or she would have known I did not get my full meal. When the other waitress brought the food I immediately told her. She never came back either. I then finally caught her attention when we were almost finished our meal for her to just keep apologizing and then She asked me who did I ask to bring the chicken. I responded I don’t know I put my order in with you. She then said oh let me talk to my manager. I said for my food. I then asked to speak to the manager. Of course he never came.
It’s disgusting you can not put in an order at a restaurant and they get it correct. I WILL NOT be returning.

I enjoyed visiting the small San Diego Chinese Historical Museum in the Gas Lamp. After that, I wanted to walk around, see some of the older buildings and get something to eat. But first I needed to check in for my return flight home tomorrow. I was having major problems doing it on my mobile phone; I had to keep trying many times. I was sitting at a table at an outdoor restaurant that wasn't open yet, not until dinner.
I was already aware of some of the other reviews talking about the low life homeless druggie people that hang around in this quarter.
But I was deeply engrossed in my phone and a woman who clearly look drugged out came over to me and started asking for something and I was really engrossed is my problem. I told her that I was in the middle of something and I just kept my head down working on my phone. Then she spit on my arm. I got up and started to chase her; then a couple of other druggie types (one a young man on a bicycle) with her started yelling, defending her. I wasn't going to do anything to her physically.
Keep my experience in mind. There are some nice things in the gaslamp quarter but there are some disgusting people. The nicer older buildings are on 4th and 5th avenue. If you are into other cultural experiences I would recommend going to the Chinese Museum I mentioned above. But don't get focused on anything so much that the derelicts can come up to you.

Thinking of staying in this area but hesitant if the comments. . Has anyone stayed here lately? Are all the bars and restaurants open. Any suggestions to a hotel within walking distance to lots of bars & restaurants? Thank you

I’ve stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in the Gaslamp in January 2022 … at that point in time I can say that based on what I’ve saw 90-95% of the places I’ve seen were open … dunno what is today the situation -6 month ago it was alright
In terms of hotels … there were plenty all dependent on your budget and needs … all major brands are represented in the Gaslamp or in walking distance… should not be an issue to find something suitable …
Safe travels

Piano bar
Staying in San Diego for 4 nights in August. Someone here in the UK said there’s an amazing piano bar in the gas lamp area.
Would any one have any idea of where this would be or what it’s called

Last night, I went to a store in the gaslamp district that sold mostly socks for every occasion and size. I want to go back for some serious Christmas shopping but I couldn't find it today Help please.
