I love strolling through here when I come to Balboa Park. In the Spring it is jam-packed with blooms, especially orchids. The lighting is excellent for photography in there. Perfect place to step out of the sun for a moment and just take a deep...More

I love botanical gardens and Balboa park. However, the collection in this building was not my cup of tea. It is mostly tropical plants and even then the plants are not well identified. The pond is nice but its hard to enjoy it because the...More

I always discover something new in the Botanical Building and Lily Pond because plants are rotated regularly. Orchids are always on display, but the specific type and color varies. One constant is the price -- free. For a shady spot to sit or refresh yourself...More

This is a beautiful small glass house botanical garden that always puts a smile on my face. Well maintained, lovely variety of blooming orchids and cycads. When last there a well behaved group of school children were seated and drawing flowers. Wonderful!

We enjoyed touring the Botanical Building in Balboa Park. The soaring architecture is gorgeous and even more impressive given that it was built for the 1915 Exposition. It's full of over 2,000 lush tropical plants. My favorites were the vast array of unique colorful orchids...More

The photo opportunities here are endless. It can get crowded inside the palm house, but it ebbs and flows. Often we've had it to ourselves. It's free, as are the desert garden and rose garden across the pedestrian bridge. Unfortunately, they are not good about...More

Do you have any idea of how much time to allot to leisurely stroll through the outdoor areas of Balboa Park ( not including the zoo) ?

If you stay on the paths, you can enjoy the park in two-three hours. If you have more time, you'll enjoy it more because there are several not-on-paths strolls down and up the hills, and of course enjoying the various... More

I just saw this question. No, no fees. The park is a great family experience, the grounds are free. You pay for the museums throughout though. And the zoo.
