We were fortunate to be there first thing on a weekday morning--extremely uncrowded! The ships are gorgeous and really made us feel like we went back in time--or at least were on a historic movie set! We highly recommend the $5 add-on 45-minute harbor tour, but make sure to sit up front to be able to hear the very interesting history and stories. (The back has a lot of other noise that drowns out the narrator.)

It was great walking around the ships. The volunteers working there were knowledgeable and helpful. We had a 5 and 7 year old with us and they really enjoyed it. The highlight of the trip was the Pilot Boat cruise of the bay, which is included in the ticket. The person on the microphone was fabulous. I have lived in San Diego for many years and still learned so much about the bay from him. I would recommend the museum to visitors to San Diego and residents.

We bought our tickets in advance online. The design of the museum is very unique. Instead of a building that speaks of ships, you can actually board multiple ships and walk throughout them. Some levels were closed due to covid restrictions during our visit, so I will be excited to return when they open up again. We also added on the $5 bay cruise. Absolutely worth it. A small ship will take you around the bay and point out current vessels that are docked in the surrounding area. You do a wide loop and the guide will inform you about the ships in their museum as well as their neighbor- the USS Midway. I would recommend getting out to see as many ships that they have now, some are seasonal & some are deteriorating, so each trip may be different with what you're able to see.

Enjoyed walking on several historic sailing ships and a Russian submarine. The docent was very knowledgeable regarding San Diego maritime history and offered some interesting information.
