I enjoy legit haunted places (with a group and employees present) so this was cool to me. I do realize that without someone directing you with a little flare that it IS just an old house with information to read about. It's some fun among other things to do in the Old Town district of San Diego, though.

Our family went here after seeing it on several "ghost shows" on television. The history of the building itself is interesting, but at least our tour was self-guided. We were given a piece of paper with the history of each room, but it felt anti-climactic. Employees were there and available for questions and stories, but had to be asked. Maybe some people enjoy exploring on their own, but I would have preferred a guided tour by an experienced tour guide. Tickets were $10 (discounts for people over 55) and are purchased at the building next to the Whaley House. You'll also want to visit the cemetery down the street where Yankee Jim is buried.

This place was cramped and dark. I think that they deliberately keep it dark in here because it is supposedly haunted. I wasn't scared. I didn't see a ghost and no ghosts showed up on my camera phone. It's not worth the ten bucks unless your really into this stuff.

I was pretty disappointed with the Whaley House because I had been hearing about it for years!! Was looking forward to a ghostly visit because that is the reason I came!! They gave us a piece of paper for us to read and then let us loose to wander around on our own. No talk about the "ghosts" or anything. Took about 10 minutes to go through the rooms and saw nothing but old furniture. The museum next door was the highlight of the visit because of the cute dolls of Edgar Allen Poe and Nikola Tesla and the nice lady that we talked to. Also, it is situated on a cool street right in the midst of Old San Diego so all was not lost. Had a blast walking up and down the street where it was situated. I would recommend for the location not the house.
