Love the atmosphere, but can be better as a tourist attraction

i walked around downtown for about 1.5 hours, and the people and atmosphere already left me a strong impression -- creative, liberal, and full of colors! I would suggest more information or designed stops for tourists. For example, i was visiting the art galleries. In most galleries, my group was the only one there and we felt a little bit... More

We began our walk in front of the Asheville Art Museum which was closed and fenced off by a construction company. It appeared to have been closed for quite a while. We didn't know where to go and couldn't decipher the public tourist map on the corner (it didn't even show "you are here"). We walked West and found an... More

Was cool to walk around and check out everything. Although it seems to be plagued by a bunch of homeless crunchy people asking for money so they can buy either booze or as one of them put it... "dude, can i bum a buck so I can get some acid or coke". So there's that

When walking around this area, one comes across the "Catwalk" which has life size sculptures of cats in motion (as in on a lamppost!), or crouched down. There are also murals painted on sides of buildings, and great architecture on the courthouse building. In front of the Thomas Wolfe Theatre there are sculptures of fiddlers, a couple, and children dancing.

We had fun walking around looking at a variety of art work. Loved watching the glass blowing demonstration.

The Downtown Asheville Art District is full of art galleries, restaurants, and shops. When you visit the studios and galleries there are sometimes artists working, other times you just get to appreciate the work or find that piece needed for your place. What is really nice is all these studios and galleries are in one area and you can easily... More

We took a weekend trip to Asheville to see the Biltmore and such. On Saturday, March 18th, in the afternoon, we decided to go downtown and walk around, sightsee. We drove around and around downtown, and could not find ANY parking ANYWHERE. We tried going to 3 different parking garages, all of which were full, we looked for metered parking... More

Lots of shops and restaurants in this downtown arts district. So many shops are locally owned (and proudly display signs in the windows stating such) so you can find things there that you won't find elsewhere. There are many places to eat and little cafes as well. This is a must-do area of Asheville.

We love to walk. And walk we did visiting all the studios and galleries in Asheville. Or at least enough. Glass, pottery, fine art, antiques, 2nd hand stores all told a story about this area. Friendly people sharing their art and history. Most enjoyable.
