- AnthonyNew York City, New York867 contributionsA Must SeeOne of Utah’s MIghty Five, this is a beautiful national park with overlooks giving amazing views. We visited the Islands in the Sky portion of the park. From many of the viewpoints, it’s evident we were high up looking down on the surrounding landscape. Mesa Arch is probably the most famous formation given its usage in a Microsoft desktop background. We also found the Green River Overlook and Grand View Point Overlook to be impressive with both viewpoints a short walk from their parking lots. While the park did not require reservations to enter, there was still a 15 minute wait to get past the front gate to enter when we visited in early September. Most of the parking lots were busy but not full. There is a visitor’s center with rangers answering questions and a souvenir shop. However, there is no plumbing in the park and all the toilets are vault toilets. There are also no dining facilities in the park, so make sure to pack something to eat. While you’re in the area, don’t forget to visit the neighboring Dead Horse Point; we found the view from there to be just as impressive.Visited September 2022Written 18 December 2022
- Shaked007Hod Hasharon, Israel1,694 contributionsMagnificent Scenery!! Majestic Nature at its Best!!Canyonlands N.P. was definitely one of the highlights of our recent trip to Utah. We only had one day (regretfully, to be amended next time for sure!!) so we concentrated on Island In The Sky. We started off with the Visitor Center which was beautiful and informative, and received tips as to what to do and how to plan our day. The video is well worth watching. Then we set off to the various viewpoints and short hikes. We loved the circular route to Mesa Arch and the arch itself. Even though it was a weekend, the place wasn't crowded which was nice. We went on to visit the Green River Overlook and stopped at a few more points of interest before going to the greatest of them all - Grand View Point Overlook. As someone who has rafted the Grand Canyon some 29 times, and read John Wesley Powell's book, it was interesting to see where the Green and Colorado rivers meet, a point first discovered by Powell at the end of the 19th century. We spent some time here, hiking along the rim both ways from the parking area. We didn't want to leave. Because of the expanse and the huge area that can be viewed from this point, photos don't really do it justice, but i have attached a few nevertheless. Beautiful Park!! Amazing Scenery!!Visited October 2022Written 29 December 2022
- JoeFRocklin175 contributionsBreathtaking even in a snowstormI visited on a cold, snowy day in late December and the park which sits at around 6000' was in the clouds, so all I could see at the Visitor's Center was fog. I almost gave up. Although the roads had some snow (mostly plowed) certain spots peeked out of the fog and I got some great vistas. I kept driving around and kept finding open skies and vistas, so I am glad I didn't give up. It also meant the place was deserted and I felt like I had the place to myself. If it snows, 4WD and snow tires are helpful.Visited December 2022Written 14 January 2023
- Lynnette27Elk Grove Village, Illinois231 contributionsCanyonlands- less crowded park. Get there early to be sure.We loved Canyonlands. Found it less crowded then the other National Parks in Utah. We went to both the south and north entrance and hiked most of the trails. Got there at sunrise for some beautiful pictures. The one thing I would warn you is the elevation. We were not expecting snow and could't do the trails because we were in a blizzard so changed and went to Arches and returned the following day. Watch the weather. Follow the cairns on the trail and maybe use your compass to see where your car is. We didn't have any cell phone coverage in the park so were glad to have brought maps. I would go again! There are trails I thought I couldn't handle but we did them! We were there Oct 21 but they didn't have that as an option here.Visited October 2022Written 1 March 2023
- Marcia W5 contributionsMesa Arch SunriseWe got up super early to be at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands for sunrise. Kevin Walker was our guide. It was so worth getting up early for! Of course, we were not the only people there. I was surprised to see the reflection under the arch as the sun came up.Visited March 2023Written 11 March 2023
- Paul F100 contributionsWonderful to enjoyI went here back in 2017 and had a nice overnight in the Willow Flats Campground to enjoy a good nights sleep on the picnic table. The views of the Sunrise Mesa Ridge was a classic view along with Whale rock and other areas. It feels like home.Visited August 2022Written 19 April 2023
- kht53Colorado Springs, Colorado347 contributionsCanyonlands, Island in the SkyWe camped in Moab to visit Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. That means we visited only one of the three separate regions of Canyonlands, Island in the Sky, because that entrance is close by Moab. The entrance to the Needles area is 2 hours away. This is a beautiful drive-through, with limited parking for vast canyon overlooks and pit toilet stops. You can see the whole Island in the Sky section of the Canyonlands as a drive-through with limited parking and hiking and taking pictures in 4 hours, as it's about 12 miles from the entry gate to Grand View or to Upheaval Dome, both at the ends of the one road that forks at about the 6 mile point. There is a nice Visitor Center with a film about the area. Especially beautiful were the Shafer Canyon Overlook, Buck Canyon Overlook, and Green River Overlook. There's a long drive in on Hwy 313 before you actually reach the gate with an overlook to see the Monitor and Merrimac huge formations and distant snow capped peaks, a road along which a lot of mountain bikers are having fun, some on the road but most on trails. April 28, 2023, temps rose to 76 and sunny, 55 overnight, with parking along the edges outside official parking lots at all pull-offs.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2023

- dotravelsMichigan531 contributionsWorth the driveWe stayed in Moab to visit both Arches and Canyonlands. Canyonlands doesn't have the same wow factor of amazing sights everywhere you look, but definitely worth the visit. Our time was limited so we only went to Island in the Sky. We drove the scenic road and stopped along the way. Green River Overlook and Grand Viewpoint were very interesting to see.Visited May 2023Written 18 May 2023
- Lauraly BUnited States23 contributionsUnique parkCanyonlands National Park is an interesting place to visit. It is unique in that the park is divided into three sections by the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers. I recommend hiking to Upheaval Dome and stopping at the overlooks. The area reminds me of the Grand Canyon but on a much smaller scale.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2023

Wow. Canyonlands is just amazing. We spent one day in the Islands in the Sky district then a second day I. The Needles district. We hesitated about the latter, but we’re so glad we did.
Both sections afford wonderful vistas, even from the car. We did lots of short hikes and a couple of the longer ones. Of them all, the 2.5 mile Sliprock trail in the Needles district stands out for its beauty and the fun of the Sliprock itself. One of us is in her seventies; the other in her eighties. But Sliprock was accessible for both.
Drove from Moab is beautiful in its own right, especially the section that goes through Bears Ears. Don’t miss this park—especially the Needles section. NO PEOPLE this time of year.

This definitely different from The Arches; you are in the car more and the hikes are much harder except for a couple "walks" to vantage points. The area is quite large but if you are not there for a day hike or camping you can see almost everything in a few hours. Facilities are sparse and you need to bring your own water and food.

Absolutely heaven on earth. I visited on the winter and on the right moment when its snowing. The whole place covered in white snow and foggy everywhere. There were no much people, seem like everyone rushed to get out of here before heavy snow but i decided to stay overnight. I was scared for the first 5 minutes but the beauty, strength and spirit of this park took away my worrisome. After that I just enjoyed every second. I could say this is the most incredible view of one of the earth's spectacular wonders! You can drive right up to most of the view points seeing the scenic sights or have potions for a short hiking like Mesa Arch( 0.5 miles = 30 minutes), White Rim Overlook( 1.8 miles = 1.5 hours), Grand View Point( 2 miles = 1.5 hours), Grand View Point( 3.6 miles = 2 hours). Oh, there's nowhere to buy anything so you have to bring in what you need, but don't litter the park!

Spectacular national park located just outside the town of Moab Utah. Every view is equal to or better than the previous. Even better to come back late at night to see the Milky Way. To get into the park, I drove the Shafer Trail out of Moab via Potash road. The drive (you really need a high clearance vehicle, like a Jeep or pickup truck, to be on the Shafer trail) provided an additional experience of being in a part of the canyon, instead of looking down in it. Spend the time to drive the 12 miles beyond the visitors center out to Grand View Point Overlook for an expansive view of Canyonlands. If you have a high-clearance vehicle, take Long Canyon road back into Moab. Both Shafer and Long Canyon roads are easy, low technical roads. Enjoy!!!

So I’ll be honest guys, whenever I was researching the Mighty Five this park was the one I was least excited for. But! It’s truly stunning. My group loved this park and the many great lookouts and pull offs, which is really great for people with mobility issues. We did hike the Mesa Arch trail later in the day and there was people, but way less than first thing in the morning. It’s a beautiful place! The visitor center is small and only has pit toilets. We got there first thing in the morning and had no wait to get in, but by about 10:00 AM there was quite the line to get into the park. Do not skip this one!

Came here after spending the morning at Dead Horse State Park. It’s just down the road (maybe 7-8 miles). Arrived around 11am. Had to wait 15 minutes or so to enter the park (the Island in the Sky District). Went straight to the Grand View Point Overlook – and the name is appropriate. Grand it is! Spectacular views – especially if you take the 2 mile up and back trail from the parking lot. Just awesome. 360 degree views from the end. An easy walk for the most part – you have to climb the rocks at the end. We spent ½ hour or so just sitting at the top. It WAS crowded but not as much as at the parking lot. This is the only stop we did. Mesa Arch was too crowded and since we had hiked 7 miles today already we called it quits.

You can do this park in half a day. Some epic views to be had. Mesa Arch sunrise is incredible and worth doing. Do this one with a Arches visit. Only went to Islands of the Sky district.

Fabulous views and very helpful guides at the Visitor Center. Although it’s near Arches the topography is totally different. We thought we were traveling off season but it turns out fall is their busiest time. We waited an hour just to get into the park… there was only one person manning the entrance gate. Also the plumbing is primitive …basically just outhouses.

I was oblivious to how vast and stunning this landscape is. It can’t be captured in images - I needs to be experienced. The GuideAlong app was invaluable for providing information - best $10 you can spend. Mother Nature is the most miraculous and patient artist. There are no words to adequately describe the grand views.

My husband and I would like to take our sons to Canyonlands. HOwever, we have a 9 year old with ASD who sometimes likes to run off. Therefore, we removed Bryce and Grand Canyon from our list. Can anyone tell us of any hiking trails in Canyonlands without drop off's where if he ran he would not get hurt?

We rented a Twisted Jeep, drove a few of the 4WD roads, he’d probably like the views from the Jeep.

Knowing how crowded it can be, what are the chances of getting a good photo of sunrise at Mesa Arch, even if you get there early? Wouldn't somebody always be in your picture?

We had no one in any of our pictures- and we took many of them. People we genuinely helpful and accommodating - especially if asked. Get there about 45 min before sunrise and you’ll have no competition for set up.

How are the Utah national parks in the winter? We're planning a visit in mid- to late- February and hope the snow won't be a problem. Any advice?

Cedar Breaks National Monument and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon are closed for the season due to snow accumaulation at their higher altitudes. Bryce Canyon's rim also ranges from 8-9000 feet on the Pahsunguint Plateau, but the visitor center remains open year round. The scenic drive and other roads and trails within the park can close at any time during the winter/spring season due to weather conditions, so check the park website. Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Vermillion Cliffs and Glen Canyon NRA remain open year round, although some facilities and trails may be cl osed. Again, check each park's website for current information. Overall, you shouldn't have much of a problem because Utah's canyon country gets a lot less snow than you do in Golden. Remember the blizzard of '83 or the series of spring snowstorms in 2007? I do, and that is why I no longer live in the front range.

Hotels are so expensive in Moab ($200+ per night)... is Monticello a good alternative to stay for .2 nights? We plan to do both Arches and CanyonlandscNational Park during Spring of 2019.

Salve!
Ad Island in the sky ci sono bei trekking da fare? ( che non siano troppo lunghi e fatcosi). O si visita tutti scendendo e salendo sull'auto?
Grazie!

Canyonlands is Utah's largest national park and it's good to be aware of what it can offer to each other, in order to take advantage of the time available in the most intelligent way possible.
If you have a couple of hours to visit the area, as well as reach the sights by car, you could also do the short loop-trail (less than a mile walk in total) that takes you to Mesa Arch, a wonderful natural arch right on the edge of the mesa, perfect setting for the sunset. The trail's attack is about 10 km after the Visitor Center.
Or you could take another fascinating trail, the Upheaval Dome Trail, which leads to a huge crater that is said to have been caused by the fall of a meteorite. The trail's attack (which is a little more than a mile in total, but can also be traveled on to a lesser extent) is reached by continuing the road past the Mesa Arch car park for about 8 km.
sorry for the bad translation
