Definitely worth taking a day to go for a drive next to the Colorado river, and top it with a hike. I recommend the Grandstaff trail (easy) or the Fisher towers trail, which ends under the cathedral of phenomenal towers that were used as backdrop in many movies (Westworld, The Comancheros, etc) and are known among climbers for classical routes up the Titan peak. Take 128 off of 191 for a shorter way to see some of Utah's best red rocks. And do drive further on 128 East along the Colorado river. Spectacular.....don't rush !

Moab is a busy town with lots of traffic and the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks get really busy. If you want a little respite from all the traffic and crowds then this short and beautiful drive is for you. Turn right on the 128 as you exit Moab to the north. The exit is just before the Colorado river bridge. The road follows the river with gorgeous views of the Sandstone Cliffs and Canyons. Turn right again to head to the small town of Castle Valley. On the way you will pass by the Castle Creek Winery - a great stop to take a break and taste local wine. Next to the winery is a resort with a stellar bar and restaurant overlooking the river. A great place to have a drink or eat. Past the town of Castle Valley the road winds up the mountain through forest and has spectacular views.…

We arrived a little late in the morning on a busy day at Arches and found the park was closed with a sign to come back in 3 hours. We headed up river a little south of the park and went all the way to Fisher towers, and then back down Castle Valley all the way to the overlook. The drive was beautiful and at the top, we took time to see some cool dinasaur tracks and the overlook of the valley was super cool. We have been to Moab many times and I was glad we took a few hours to explore the back side of the mountain.…
