I guess the highway used to run through here before the '89 quake, at which point they removed it and set the land for redevelopment. There were a lot of interesting places to check out, many of which we did on the city tour. Some very good food choices along this area, along with murals and alike. If in the... More

We had a great breakfast at Stacks (pancakes, smoothies, waffles and eggs) then we shopped at Undefeated. Great hip sneaker shop. Kit and Ace, I bought some shorts and tee. Alternative for tops and bottoms at a reasonable price. Put this on your shopping list, this street. It has much to offer.

This formerly quiet and somewhat rundown neighborhood is now among the most chic and expensive. First the Symphony Hall was built, soaking a boom in restaurant openings. Then the elevated freeway came down, creating large plots of vacant land that were sold to developers. Now everyone flocks here for high-end shopping and food. Don't miss the excellent SF Jazz Center.

This neighborhood has it all. The Alamo square park which is the quintessential San Fransisco park plus Patricia's green. There is a homely neighborhoody feel but on the main street (Hayes) there are wonderful restaurants for every budget and taste, boutique shops, coffee shops, etc. If you want to see how people in SF live, come here. There is a... More

A friend of mine lives near Hayes Valley, and so we often end up there for dinner or wandering around. There are a lot of great restaurants, some cute boutique stores, and some great dessert places, all within a few blocks. It's really a gem, especially compared to the other nearby places.

The neighborliness used to be great but then gentrification happened and things got money and hipster. A good walk on a nice day.

Formerly a lovely small neighborhood overshadowed by the rougher neighborhoods bordering it, this is now a more hip neighborhood with million dollar condos, great restaurants, and steps away from city hall, opera, ballet, etc on one side, and painted ladies, USF, golden gate park on the other side. As with every transition, there are still a lot of rough patches,... More

Staying in Hayes Valley

Neighbourhood Profile
Hayes Valley
Chock full of designer boutiques, art galleries, funky shoe stores, and great restaurants, it’s hard to imagine Hayes Valley once languished in the shadow of a major freeway. Its removal allowed for the creation of an attractive boulevard on Octavia Street with a community park at its center and dozens of trendy businesses to satisfy visitors looking for a stylish respite.
