We love finding independent bookstores in new locations. When we had a rainy day - we decided to go and spend a couple of hours at Alexander Book Company. 3 floors with both mainstream and slightly eclectic offerings. Places to sit and helpful staff. An excellent book store for browsing.

Any time we visit a "new" City, we try to find a good Bookstore, and before we came to San Francisco, my online researches suggested that "Alexander Book Company" would be worth checking out - it was indeed worth the effort. The Store is on 2nd Street, (4 Blocks from Union Square), in a quite narrow-fronted 3 storey building (near... More

Great selection of books with friendly staff. They helped me choose books for my children while I was on a business trip. I love to bring books back as gifts and this spot made it extra special.

There appears to be a real lack of good bookstores in San Francisco, so if you're after a book or feel like browsing then I highly recommend going here - friendly staff too.

This is a very good bookstore for any need. 3 story building and many titles available. They have a very wide array of books. Recommended for all family and ages. Have to go!

There is a broad selection of books on three floors. It has a cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

Alexander's has three floors of books, all kinds from current to boutique, fun to look around, think how the displayers think, nice friendly quick service. Really good location off Market and Post, on second street.

Do you know how hard it is to find a REAL bookstore anymore? Yes, there are still many of us who read books with paper pages and, when out of reading material while traveling, would like to find a bookstore with a wide selection of books for whatever mood we are. Alexander Books made my dream come true! A three-story... More

Our kids loved books and we googled this one near Union Square. Had been trying to go a coupla times but the closing time of 6pm makes it difficult for us. One day we tried going early but the long wait for bus and cable car made us arrive at just past 6. We wanted to at least go in... More

I came here for the first time with my hubby in May 2015. This place was wonderful. I love and support indie bookstores. This place has friendly staff, lots of books on hand, nice layout, nice and many books with large discounts. and a Frequent Buyer Program!! The Alexander Book Company is also conveniently located near the Montgomery BART Station.

Staying in SoMa

Neighbourhood Profile
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighbourhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighbourhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
