Grant Avenue is the central core of Chinatown in San Francisco. It has all you need in terms of restaurants, shops and street lanterns.

Grant is the main touristy Chinatown Street and then a street with some restaurants that turns residential as it heads further into North Beach.
Either way, you need to get off it to experience Chinatown and North Beach.
In Chinatown it is full of tourist shops etc. Check out Stockton for the real local shops and then the alleyways of Chinatown for a cuter experience.

Runs right through North Beach and Chinatown. In Chinatown you will find the lovely and important lion's gate, plus lots of interesting shops for souvenirs or just vegies. In North Beach there if food and drink plus a real neighborhood.

This colorful and iconic street runs through the heart of Chinatown. There are lots of photo opportunities here. Look for the festive red lanterns, Dragon's Gate, and green tile roofs. Since we were there in the afternoon, Grant Avenue was in the shadows.

We happened to visit during the Moon festival. What a treat! Moon cakes everywhere, street vendors very patient with people who don’t understand Chinese food or customs. Music and entertainment lined the street.
We enjoyed Vital Tea-Leaf tea tasting, as the owner explained the different teas in a very approachable manner. We ate on a second floor patio so we could watch the fun from above.
Even on non festival days, this is a great place to visit, but be aware that Covid has shortened business hours. Most is open between 11 and 6 pm. We felt safe walking through, even after stores had closed.

We were delighted walking the avenue length from Embarcadero to Dragon's Gate. Strolling southwards the shop fronts, emblems and decorations increasingly reflected the community.
Historic Portsmouth Square was fascinating to see. It was the centre of Chinese arrivals in the 1840s and where Montgomery, Commander of the USS Portsmouth, raised the American flag in July 1846 proclaiming US sovereignty over the territory.
It was enjoyable listening to informal Chinese music and singing in the Park, as was seeing groups relaxing over card and board games.
Close by is the Chinese Culture Center that is also worth spending some time in.
Lanterns suspended, ornate shop frontages with warriors and other images and a plethora of services and goods available made for a most enjoyable couple of hours.
