We totally stumbled on this going to Coit Tower and it was amazing! Hard to explain, you just have to do it.

Seems a good idea and looks easier than perhaps it is - can be an effort but worth it when you see the views from the top

These steps are steep, and there are lots of them. Just when you think you must be near the end, there are more steps. If you are out of shape, beware. But the walk is great. It goes through residential paths with nice gardens in from of cute cottages. If you go far enough (high enough), you can reach Coit... More

If you're lucky enough to be in San Francisco on a clear day, the Filbert Steps are worth a peek. At this elevation, you can catch several gorgeous sites in one hike, including, Alcatraz, Coit Tower and Ghiradelli Square. Watch you step as the route is full of uneven steps and pavement! And as dorky as it sounds, a selfie... More

If you want to really, REALLY want to walk San Francisco, take the F-line MUNI tram and start at the Ferry Building/ Justin Herman Plaza. Walk north ten blocks -through Bierman Park, Walton Plaza & Levi's Plaza- over to Sansome & Filbert Streets where Filbert Street is interrupted by a steep cliff. Then commence your climb UP the Filbert Steps.... More

Nice way to get down from the Coit Tower to the Embarcadero! Take the “Greenwich Steps” down to Montgomery Street (go careful), then 2 mins along Montgomery to the “Filbert Steps”. Admire the delightful gardens and homes on your way down (Whilst wondering how the residents manage to get their shopping home!) Pity the steps at the bottom of the... More

I'll admit I was thankful to experience this steep set of Steps going downwards - we had climbed up to Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill, from the other side, and that was, for me at least, quite challenging. There's a distinctive character to this route : wooden Steps for much of the way, residential Houses as you go, charming Plant... More

Easy to park on the street at the bottom - pay and display. The walk up isn't that far, passing really nice looking houses. Even saw some parrots hanging out in the trees. Good way to access the Coit Tower, but worth doing regardless.

We love to walk and SF is a walking city, although we had bought a three-day pass so used a lot of public transport. We headed to the North Beach and then walked to Coit Tower up the Filbert Steps, among other hills, then the bus to fisherman's wharf.

If your camera is like mine, taking photos looking into the sun doesn't capture the colors like what you see. And there's a lot of good views as you ascent Telegraph Hill. So plan your up/down with the best Sun angle. That's a lot of climbing to not get good photos! The 3rd tier of Filbert is full of color.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
