We passed by this park literally every day we were in SF and this place was always packed with activity no matter the time of day. It is in the heart of the action, despite not being all that big, no shortage of people filling up the lawn. I will say, that in SF, people definitely make use of their... More

This square is in the middle of North Beach and Chinatown and is surrounded by lovely buildings. Everyone loves it, people sit for hours. Drink in the atmosphere.

Great place to visit--great statues, peaceful. Also nice place to sit, relax, enjoy the surrounding and meet interesting people like we did today.

Washing Square is a lovely park at one end of China Town to sit and relax. People flock here to have their lunch or wait to catch a bus. There is a beautiful famous church at one end of the square, Saint peter and paul Church. Joe DiMaggio was married there and it featured in a Dirty Harry movie. After... More

Not much going on here. Just a stop on ones way to Coit Tower maybe or the cathedral. Located in little Italy of course.

We happened to walk by the park on our way to Telegraph Hill. There was a group of (presumably) Chinese ladies practicing an exercise/dance with large fans which they snapped open and closed with precision. Cool!

A soul singer, right after the gate, covering Sam Cooke's songbook, at least 60, still talented. A jazz orchestra, at the other side of the fountain. Mid July, an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, people hanging around, listening, or reading a book.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
