Beautiful clear day and had a wonderful view of the bridge. Unfortunately someone’s back window of their car was smashed in and the police were there which made it impossible to park anywhere. The parking lot is very small, there is an overflow parking area just a short walk away. I don’t know how a car window could have been smashed in with all the parking attendants milling about. If you go, make sure you pay for parking at one of the little kiosks or you’ll get a ticket for sure. This is located just before you’re about to go over the bridge on the right if coming from the city. There’s a cross section of the cable that you can get pictures with and you can take the sidewalk and walk on the bridge. It was very crowded and congested.

The start of the building of the Golden Gate Bridge dates to Jan. 5, 1933 during the Great Depression even though aspirations for such a bridge began in the 1800's. It took four years to build and in 1937 it was finally completed. The bridge is named after the Golden Gate Strait which connects San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. A day before it was open for automobile traffic 200, 000 people walked. ran and roller bladed across the largest suspension bridge of its time. The bridge is painted in "international orange", a color which would not have been even on my radar. San Francisco is noted for it's high winds and the bridge is built to sway 27' side-to-side as well as, 16' up and down. I am not sure if that makes it earthquake proof. Never the less, high winds can effect some vehicles as they are crossing the 4,200 foot length from end to end. If you wish to to take photographs there are a number of options. A visitor center exists on the San Francisco city side. There is a gift and cafe there as well. Other viewing sites are the Battery East Parking Lot and there is a small park near the bridge. If you wish to cross the bridge there is a toll of $9. You can pay the toll online or use the electronic Fast Pass system in this case you will receive a voucher in the mail. I parked in the Golden Gate visitor center and walked less than 1 mile to the other side. There is also a bike lane. On the Marion County side "Sausalito" you will find Twin Peaks lookout point. At night people gather for photos and to see the bridge lit up. Lands End Park is another option. Covid-19 has thrown parking in disarray.

I sailed underneath this bridge at sunset this past summer. It lit up bright pink and gold. One of the most awe-inspiring sights I've ever seen in my life. If you like Bridges this is one of the grand Daddy's. If you could see it from the water go for it if not go to one of the parks at either end. And of course, drive over it

Great place where beautiful pictures can be taken from different angles. If you are visiting San Francisco this is the main attraction.
