The area
Neighbourhood: Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighbourhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.

Take a step back into the flower child era right here, and don't miss walking this cool and notable neighborhood. Haight-Ashbury was on our touristy list of places to visit (I had been here years prior) and walk and it did not disappoint with it's shops, murals, significant homes (Hendrix, Joplin, Grateful Dead), and places to stop for eats/drinks. You do feel like you have taken a step back into a time that was more revolutionary, yet simpler than today and it was refreshing. Easy walk, free and you can get a great cup of coffee. There is a T-shirt store on the corner (Love on Haight) that is quirky and sells some artist made tie-dye shirts/clothes that are exceptional (and a bit pricey, but hey you are touristing). The mural on the store alone is worth seeing.

If you’re a sixties fan you will want to go here. We were lucky enough to be there when they had their annual street fest. It was like a step back in time. If you remember Woodstock in the sixties and a lot of group singers this was the place.

Something tells me you need to have been alive during the 60's to appreciate this area, and you need to share your memories with the younger generation. This was our experience. Two of us were young adults during the 60's, and our stories helped our 18 and 19 year old kids to understand and put into context what they were seeing. Despite the rather tacky nature of the shops, it is a place steeped in history, if you care enough to find it. This should never be a place for a high-brow experience, the characters who frequented the streets were there partly in protest to that kind of lifestyle. Embrace it for what it is, and get a free Welcome Guide which will point you in the direction of houses and haunts of the late and great. If the stores bother you, check out the wonderful homes on the side streets, and use your guide to see who once lived there. Or check out some of the murals, with personal images and signatures of some famous folks. The vintage clothing store is superb. To me many items looked like performers' costumes. You can also pick up some great little 60's stuff which our kids really liked. Bottom line, it is an experience if you go with the correct mindset. We parked easily, and had no problems with that. A few homeless here, but they were only sleeping, and did not bother us. Walked to GG Park.

The Haight Ashbury's claim to fame in this day and age is that it was the most popular hang out of the Hippies and the original Flower People back in the '60s and '70s. There are many eateries, souvenir shops, and memorabilia of different kinds on sale. You do bump into a few modern day Hippies. The wall murals are interesting depicting the music legends of those faraway days. It's worth the walk and you can spend an hour- or much more- depending on your level of interest.

I specifically went here to check out what i thought was a Goth clothing store but realized, it was yet another vintage clothing store. I felt rather uncomfortable in this area. Lots of loitering hippies (as expected i guess) openly dealing their goods while invading everyone's space. I also thought most stores were surprisingly expensive. I was happy to find a HUGE record store but, wasn't impressed with what they had. Glad i visited because of the history but, i would recommend to stay clear if visiting.

Our tour of San Francisco took us into this part of the city.....such a funky street with colorful storefronts. We quickly drove through the area, though, so a few days later, we took an Uber to take a closer look at this interesting neighborhood.

It's like stepping back into the 60's with Jimi's house, psychedelic-painted shops, and lots of "consignment" stores selling clothes from the 60's and beyond!

Yes, there were those who were puffing away & feeling no pain as well as others who were obviously homeless, but we still felt quite safe during our visit.

A step back into history that will make you smile with all the memories it will awaken.

The intersection between these two streets recalls the Summer love of San Francisco in '67 and the hippie generation. There are still nostalgics for that period and the clock stopped at 4.20 also symbolizes the nostalgic stopping of time as well as representing the best time to dream. Framed by various shops selling souvenirs of the time and many Victorian style buildings, some of which are really interesting

Was in San Francisco area and had to visit Haight-Ashbury district. Still has tye-dye shops and great little spots for coffee and a bite to eat. A few street musicians and just that vibe that personafied the hippy movement of the 60's.

My 19 year old son and I spent a fun afternoon walking down Haight Street checking out all the stores. Saw lots of store owners standing outside talking to what seemed to be local folks. Very relaxed atmosphere and it was a lot of fun seeing all the colorful murals on every block. I definitely recommend visiting this neighborhood if you can fit it in your schedule.

Visited Haight Ashbury on a rainy morning and ended up spending the day wandering around the shops and trying out a few pubs. It’s been said in many other reviews but the area really does have a great, relaxed vibe. We were made to feel welcome by all of the locals and it’s probably the area we’d want to revisit first on a return trip. Side note – we loved our time here so much we named our cat ‘Ashbury’. If that’s not an endorsement of the area I don’t know what is!
