Book well in advance - its busy but well organised Really worth it - the tour is super and we were lucky to meet an ex-inmate who was doing a book signing (he wasn't a murderer!) Don't miss it - a must

The Alcatraz information gained on their tour was amazing. USA does everything so well. I'd love to do this tour again. No rushing, lovely surrounds, plenty of time to absorb the iconic site. Don't miss it.

Great day out when in SF. The tour was good and the information via headphones really good. Do remember to book your tickets on-line before you go, or you will probably have to settle for boat trip around the island.

Nothing to write home about. The best thing about this is that you get a cool ferry ride in the harbour.

We did the night tour which is the best way to see Alcatraz as it's much quieter and you are given time to look around on your own after the guided tour. Our guide Steven was incredible. Very knowledgeable and couldn't do enough for you....More

Alcatraz has been around for a very long time as one kind of federal outpost or another. William Tecumseh Sherman built the first army base there before the Civil War in the 1850s and it continued in military use for many years. The federal penitentiary...More

It is a must visit for those travelling to san Francisco. The audio tour comes free with the tickets and is very interesting. The views from atop the island are spectacular. But please do book in advance to avoid disappointment as the tours get sold...More

Alcatraz was amazing. Full of history, and definitely worth it. We went on the boat tour, which was pricey but definitely worth the money if you like history. If you have the chance, the audio tour will really help especially if you do not know...More

I will travel with my daughters, 9 and almost 2 years old. Is this attraction recommended for kids?

The tour is heard through headphones, detailing isolation experienced, uprisings etc. Your younger daughter can easily miss this. If you think your 9 year old may find this upsetting, she can also avoid this part of the... More

We are looking to book the tour only for July 26. The website shows no tours until end of August. "Tour" companies have tickets available and a steeply increased rate with other packages. Do you have any recommendations or advice so my family can experience the rock?

I am visiting San Francisco in August and would really like to visit Alcatraz. However, my problem is that I don't know my plans and am not really able to book in advance. Am I likely to be able to buy a ticket when I get there? I'll have about a week and will be on my own so I'll only need one ticket and will be pretty flexible? Thanks

Emily from my experience the tours sell out pretty fast. I was there Memorial Day which may have been a factor in the demand. I suggest you start looking on line at the site in June and July to see if the tickets still... More
