Katmai Air provided excellent service with our flight to Aniakchak. We landed on Surprise Lake in the caldera of an old volcano. The views were spectacular. Our pilot was very knowledgeable. He led us up a hill where we picked wild blueberries, huckleberries, and raspberries.

There are several ways to reach Aniakchak Caldera. We flew from King Salmon on a charter flight from Branch Air Service. As the Caldera is so big, it has its own weather that cannot be predicted in advance. Some of our friends had spectacular weather, some had only a little time inside the Caldera, and some had to trun back... More

This is an extraordinary isolated, beautiful setting. Set inside a 6 mile diameter caldera, last erupted in 1931, and ringed in snowfields, this is a wonderful hiking destination over tundra, lava fields, up cinder cones, and peering into the blue maar. Waterfalls were plentiful, and we saw a number of grizzly (one who visited our camp without any incident) and... More

Flew around inside the volcano and over the cone. Beautiful lake! The pass entry is awesome and the surrounding scenery is stunning.

The flight was spectacular but we didn't quite make it through the gates due to a low ceiling. Regardless, the flight was amazing overlooking the river leading out of the gates. We saw several beautiful waterfalls and landed on another lake outside the main caldera.

Bears and Fishing abundant. The weather didn't cooperate, but despite the rain and mosquitos we had a wonderful time. The preserve is well layed out and the personnel make sure everyone is safe and that the animals are not traumatized by visitors.
