Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is our favorite beach in Oahu. Been here in the winter and fall and each time it's excellent. Besides the obviously nice sand and clear warm water, this park has plenty of free parking spaces. Unlike nearby Lanikai Beach where there's limited street parking. There's also plenty of shaded areas to sit under and the facilities aren't as bad as some reviewers say. Loved the soft sand and wide long stretches of beach. Can't wait to come back soon.

Wow !! This beach is absolutely stunning !! We came here on a weekday mid morning so parking was not a problem. The beach itself has soft white sand and the most beautiful turquoise water. It was really calm, perfect for swimming, and there was not a cloud in the sky. This was my favourite beach in Oahu.

Very pretty beach. We went early and it was not at all crowded. Soft white sandy beach. Clear water the waves were pretty gentle while we were there. There were people kayaking, using outriggers, and some wind surfing. There were lifeguards and bathhouses. The bathhouses weren't bad while we were there. Parking was fairly easy.

This is our favorite beautiful beach, when we come to Hawaii. The only thing that turns me off is the public bathroom. It’s always filthy, grungy and smells horrendous. There’s even hypodermic needle plungers in the changing area that my husband saw in one of the restrooms. It’s quite a revolting, disgrace.
This is not something that the locals can be happy with, so it makes one wonder how it’s being tolerated. This is a world class beach and public restroom and shower facilities are not maintained. It looks like zero investment as been made in 30 years to this park’s facilities. If I lived here I’d volunteer time to keep toilets clean, or organize other volunteers to take turns cleaning the restrooms. Perhaps local politicians need removal from office. Why is this ok for it to be in this condition?

There are a lot of beaches in Hawaii. Lots. And quite a few good ones. This one is my favorite. Why? I think it’s the prettiest and most interesting. It’s a long beach with some nice views and some benches to sit on and admire them. And there’s a nice breeze, which can kick up some sand and whack you in the face if you are in the wrong spot. What makes this place special is the prevalence of wind surfers here. We spent maybe an hour watching them go every which way, including up and down ( some guy was like a Zen master getting maybe 30’ – 40’ high and looping back down – I wish I could do that ). It was so much fun to watch that even my walking challenged wife took the long trek to get to the place where the preponderance of them were just to get a closer look. We were mesmerized. We really didn’t want to leave. Then she had to walk back to where we started from and she didn’t complain, even though it wasn’t easy or pain free. It was that good. We liked the neighborhood, too, lots of shops and restaurants – good ones, it looked like. If we went back to Hawaii, we would see if we could get a hotel or apartment nearby and stay a week or more and just relax. That’s the best compliment I can make.

Good beach Interesting to see the turtles in the sea, but you could really only see the tops of their shells. Occasionally one would pop its head out, but you had to be quick to see that. Worth seeing, I guess, if you are in the area.

We rented a car and drove around the island; this was one of our stops. It is a lovely beach and there weren't that many people which was nice. Beautiful clean white sand and water so clear.

We found this during my research of beaches to stop at on a drive around the island. The parking lot is decently sized, but it has a good turn around so there are always people coming and going. This beach and area is very beautiful, with soft white sand beaches, and turquoise waters. The ocean floor was very soft and had gentle waves. Looking up and down the beach, there were scenic views. This is a very popular place as we saw some wind/kite surfers, and loads of people relaxing and enjoying their beach day. We walked up and down and got in the ocean for a little bit. We wish we had more time to spend here. On our next visit, we will definitely be back and will be dedicating a beach day here.

I originally wanted to go to Lanikai Beach next door but after one of the locals told me they all look the same (they do! in the great way) and the fact Lanikai doesn't have any free parking and it's all street residential area it was a no brainer to actually enjoy some time on the beach here...
But we didn't actually come here originally for that... we chose this smaller free parking as our starting point for the Pillbox Hike as it adds an easy paved sidewalk roughly 10-15m extra to get you to the actual hike - we didn't feel like parking in front of someone's house and wanted to be respectful - it was a perfect solution!
There is food in the area or vendors so you need to bring your own supplies - there are however showers and changing rooms and restrooms!
TIP: there parking is fairly small but people come and go so just be patient and you will get a spot - in 2 days we were able to get one right away first and the 2nd time we needed to wait maybe 10 minutes at most

I won’t have a rental car, can I take The Bus from Waikiki to Kailua Beach?
Is it ok to hitch hike?

The public transport system in Oahu is awesome. Definitely can make it there. I think its about a hour or 2 on the bus. Hitch hiking sounds like the bad start to a horror movie.

Are there any stores nearby where you can rent an umbrella and chairs?

I wouldn't count on it. The only facilities are the restrooms; for anything else you would have to search around in Kailua. There are probably stores where you can buy those items but I did not see anywhere where they could be rented.

Are the bathrooms currently open in May 2021?
Hey, can you go swimming, surfing and snorkelling here? X

Yes you ‘can’ do all of the above. But the only surfing to be done is off of flat island 1/4 mile off of the beach. Snorkeling is better at other beaches, sharks cove and electric beach are a couple good ones. Swimming is decent, the ocean floor is rocky but not brutal like some reefy beaches.
