Call ahead to get the tour times. Show up, borrow binoculars (high quality, free) and follow a guide through this lovely refuge. We saw several endangered birds, learned about migrations and beak types and generally enjoyed the lovely setting. A real gem.

We thought this would be a scenic side trip. Took the road down to the end by the sewage plant only to find the refuge is closed to the public. Wasted our time but the portapotty was spotless.😁

Enthusiastic local gave us a very informative talk/walk of the birds we could see on the day and what birds would use the facility during migration. Very enjoyable and free.

Open only when stilts and coots and moorhens are done nesting, so from about mid-October to January. Very short walk - get to see the Hawaiian coot, moorhen, and bristle-thighed curlew, as well as... I understand that budget cuts and retirements have taken their toll on Hawaii refuges and we noticed it. We stopped off on an independent birding tour and saw a few birds from the roadway. It is great that the refuge exists and the they have expanded with time. It would be better if the refuge could manage to allow passerby's... More
