You are now required to make reservations (they cost $1.50 on the NPS website) to go up for sunrise and will be turned back if you don't. It's a long and arduous drive up to near the summit but it is totally worth it. Believe those who say it is COLD and wear everything warm you have including gloves and... More

We had a great day this time, clear, 57 deg. and no wind. Be aware that the visitor center at the top closes at 12:30PM. Reservations are required for sunrise (0300 to 0730 hours) and can be made up to 60 days in advance.

We stayed in Kula, which made for uneasier early morning drive to see sunrise, but we were almost too late. We planned on being at the top a good hour before sunrise, but we were not early enough to get there before the parking lot filled up. Luckily, we were in the group that could go to the stop before... More

After sunrise most people leave the park but we stayed to walk the trails and it was fantastic. If you are going to take the time to visit the park for the sunrise spend another couple hours walking the trails.

We had grand plans for a sunrise, a few sunsets plus a day trekking in Haleakala but Mother Nature had different plans. Heavy rain squalls and 40+mph winds (and a wicked wind chill factor) stopped any major adventure during our brief stay. We did get some viewing in on the last afternoon as the clouds thinned out and rain stopped.... More

I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in my life, and without a doubt Haleakala is now on my top ten list! We visited in January before the parking reservation system was implemented. We stayed at the (conveniently close) Kula Lodge and were in the visitor's lot at Haleakala at 4:30 am. Winds were buffeting our rental... More

Well, well worth a visit. The drive up through the clouds is so mysterious and beautiful. Be sure to read up on Haleakala beforehand, as there's sadly not much info to read about it in the park itself. The windy road is fun to drive, just be cautious and watch for stray cows. I'd definitely go back another time.

We first visited the park to see the crater which proved to be very windy and cold. We did some hiking along the trails here but it wasn't terribly interesting. Some views on the north east side are quite nice. The facilities were a step down from the volcano park on the big island. We later visited Oheo Gulch when... More

Amazing views and information from staff! After the fact, we really wished we would have gotten there for sunrise and spent more time hiking instead of just visiting.

First let me say you MUCT get there early and beginning Feb 2017 you must make a reservation ($5) if you want to park at the top - and that is the BEST location. It is cold and windy so dress warm. Time lapse photography is amazing if you have the ability. Take a thermos of something warm to drink... More
