Beautiful drive - for the right driver!
Jun 2021
A beautiful drive with several noteworthy stops (the Blowhole, the Olivine pools, Karen's's Lei Gallery, banana bread). The prior reviews initially convinced us not to do the drive, but a local friend provided reassurances and so we did it and were happy we did . Don't get me wrong - DO NOT DO IT IF you are a timid or nervous driver. ONLY do it if you are a confident, safe, alert, experienced driver, and even then, only in the day, with dry roads, and west to east (clockwise). But if this is you - go for it, but slowly, covering the brakes around every turn, and looking ahead to pull out if a car is approaching from across the valley. Contrary to prior reviews, there are plenty of pullouts if you plan ahead, and also, plenty of places to turn around if you change your mind... By the by, doing the drive this way allows you to tack on the beautiful Iao Needle /Iao Valley on the far side, well worth a 30 min stop on the way by, or longer if you want to dip in the river... Have fun!

Better than the Road to Hana!
Apr 2021
No one really talks about this drive around the perimeter of West Maui - surprisingly given it is nicer than the Road to Hana. Ton of scenic points along the way - allow a few hours to see it all if you do not do any trails, etc...

Drive around West Maui is an adventure! Allow a half day.
Mar 2021
Many single lane areas and bridges, and hikes and views along way. Be careful if you try to squeeze past in the wrong place- road was blocked on one switch back because one fool had his wheels hanging over the ocean side ledge. Sometimes you have to back up, slowly, and when a sign says honk horn to warn blind approaching traffic, do so.

Don't do it. Go the front way and drive around to to hanalua bay the front way and back track a bit if you like
Feb 2020
Its not a tourist friendly route narrow roads local traffic not much to see. More then one person has been punched out because they were driving like they owned it and endangered folks. Go the front way to lahaina drive kaanapale go hanalua bay that way better drive safer and then if you want to drive to that art shop that's like 5miles down the road from hanalua bay then its easier if you can get past that bridge is always out. And its not reception usually I just get the feeling the home owners don't want non local traffic because its narrow driving

Must do
Jan 2020
Very scenic drive. We did the full circle counter clockwise and followed directions from Gypsy tour app until the blowhole, which was highlight of drive. Drive beyond the blowhole is scenic and a great experience. yes narrow single lane roads but its worth the experience if you are doing counter clockwise and had experience on winding narrow roads in past. We were concerned initially reading all the bad reviews about how dangerous the drive is, but we found it very pleasant and not too dangerous at all. Many scenic pullouts too , very enjoyable drive

Lovely drive and views - but on,y to the bliowhole
Dec 2019
We took a lovely drive with “Gypsy”, the audio guide we got for The Road to Hana but we upgraded to add all of Maui. We were told lots of good places to stop and interesting hopistory and information as we went. On the way there, we stopped at a Gazebo in Napali Shores for a great breakfast - but be prepared to wait. We only went as far as the Blowhole. It was a fun scramble to get down and then back up from it but don’t try it unless you’re in reasonable shape and fairly surefooted.

West Maui Circle Drive

This is one way to get off the beaten track. There are wonderful views and you get a feel of what Hawaii was like when it was mostly rural. Make sure that you start on the Lahaina side of west Maui so that you will be on the inside lane. Drive a small vehicle. Much of the road is very good but a short portion is terrible and terrifying with only a few inches from the edges that drop off into cliffs. Karen Lei's shop has beautiful art made in Hawaii and is along the way. It has a Wailuku address but is actually about 15 miles from Wailuku. I would say the drive is worth it but be warned that it is not for everyone.

DO NOY TAKE THIS ROAD PAST THE BLOWHOLE UNLESS YOU LIKE NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES!
Oct 2019 • Couples
My husband and I were in Maui last week and took the west Maui coastline drive from Kaanapali to Wailuku and it was the most terrifying experience of my life! The road is fine for a while but it got crazy quickly! Your rental car agreement is void about 2 miles past the blowhole. We wish someone would have warned us before this horrible experience! You couldn't pay us to do it again. It's basically a bike lane with a mountain wall on one side and 300 foot cliff on the other side with no shoulder and no guard rails, just a straight drop. 90 degree turns and nearly vertical angles up and zero vision of oncoming vehicles. If you encounter another car, you will be reversing on a cliff without anywhere to go. Literally terrifying! Worst part of our trip to Maui and the locals say we were lucky to be alive after...probably not a good sign. Go do the road to Hana and have a good time.

Spectacular Views but Be CAREFUL!
Oct 2019 • Couples
The West Maui Circle Drive is also known as the Kahekili Highway, Hawaii State Highway 340 that runs north and south from Kahului through the small town of Waihee-Waiehu, flanked by the beauty of the West Maui Natural Area Reserve to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, on its way to Kahakuloa Village, one of the most isolated spots on Maui. It is one of the most dangerous roads to drive!!

Please read with a word of CAUTION. If you are out to speed and joy ride, this is not for you. If you want to capture a road less traveled have an experienced driver in your group, you can try this road. One of several warnings is the post, “9 miles of a single lane, NO SHOULDER” this is no joke and the start of a very amazing, harrowing journey that me and my husband will NEVER forget!

We started from a clock wise point, beginning in Lahaina. That way we were driving on the inside of narrow lanes. When braddahs and titas come flying by to get where they need to go there’s little time for negotiating “tight” squeezes.

There are hidden bends, twists in the road, all of it is paved but the excitement of this excursion holds serious consideration to the locals who travel this daily and don’t like discourteous drivers or ones who become too impatient. They are the true heroes for having to deal with this road on a daily basis!

Watch for sections where you can see an approaching car coming from the opposite side, stop and let them make their way to where they can pass carefully or someone has to drive backwards until you can safely pass!
Cliff edges and sometimes loose rocks fall from the other side so I would avoid this if it had been raining heavily.

Having said all that...this was my husband’s most favorite drive of our whole trip to Maui. I was chewing my lip the whole time but he used to drive buses so could gauge widths and turns. The vistas over cliff sides and into the valleys come quickly so if you are going uphill and coming around a bend you might catch a scenic view point to park your car and get out carefully.
Otherwise, don’t stop and just keep driving to get past this section. The undulating turns and curves leave new surprises of such beauty it is truly breathtaking.

Another caution is I WOULD NOT take small children on this journey, it’s risky and can be dangerous especially once it gets dark. Rental car companies pretty much say travel at your own risk, towing is on your own, limited cell service and pay for any damages to your car out of pocket!

We drove a compact SUV Buick Encore that got us through and had no trouble with the inclines and declines. Jeep 4 x 4s had no problem except for the risk takers who wanted to speed through this section, their wider bodies made for some hairy passes if it involved other cars that were just as wide! Some I had heard took several minutes as they had to decide who could most safely drive backwards to get to a section where both cars could pass.

Leave your attitude behind, start early, observe rules of the road and by all means relish one of the most beautiful areas of Maui not many people see and we can understand why!
