Amazing experience. My mother and father really enjoyed looking at the tropic birds, red footed boobies, and massive 7 foot local birds. For five dollars you can pay to go out to the lighthouse point. Gorgeous views looking back on the bird rookery and on...More

They are open 10-4 so we arrived at 3:30 one afternoon after the beach to check it out. The 1/2 hour was plenty of time to see everything. Got some great pictures, saw some beautiful animals (dolphins, birds, etc). Kids under 15 are free, adults...More

Although this is opposite side of the point where the sun sets, this made for some beautiful views at sunset.

Expect to see Wedge-Tailed Shearwaters, Laysan Albatrosses, Red and White-tailed Tropic Birds, Great Frigatebirds, and (on the way in) Ne-Ne. If you're a serious photographer, bring a zoom lens that goes up to at least 300mm if possible.

Went 3 times before the gate was ever open and then it was within 30 minutes of closing ... bird Life is incredible but $5 fee to walk on grounds seems high when most parks on island are more spectacular and free to walk in...More

Went to see the lighthouse, but it is closed on Mondays. So, looked around the refuge as much as I could see and took pictures of the many birds and the beauties therein.

Let me change that answer. That is for the Kilauea Lighthouse. The wildlife refuge isn't really a place you go into. It defines an area around the lighthouse. So it is always open to the birds, and you can come anytime... More
