This was a great introduction to snorkeling - you can get your bearings in the smaller pools, and make your way out to the deeper water once you get more comfortable. The water was incredibly clear, the temperature was lovely, and we saw TONS of...More

Despite many trips to the Big Island, I had never made it over to the Kapoho Tide Pools. They are definitely worthwhile, even if you are staying on the west side of the island. You park and walk on a paved road for about a...More

This is one of the best snorkeling places we visited on our recent trip to Hawaii. Very easy to get out and be among beautiful fish and nice coral.

We were staying in this area so got good tips from our hosts on the best places to go. The first day we went right after lunch and the place was packed, but it was also approaching high tide, which makes the tide pools bigger....More

We stayed in a house right on top of the Tide Pools, so we didn't have to walk in. The snorkeling here is amazing. You have to be careful getting in as the tides can pull you around a bit. But once you dive into...More

The guide books are a little over-enthusiastic about this place. Good snorkelling but quite cramped. You access the pools through a private road in a housing development. The homeowners have very sensibly and kindly provided parking, washrooms and signs to the beach - so make...More

On our last day in Pahoa we finally got to go snorkeling at Kapoho. We were able to park at my son's friend's place and drop my mother-in-law off so she didn't have to walk all the way. There is some parking, but it's quite...More

As described above, its about a 10 minute walk to reach the pools walking the subdivision roadway, so easy. There is a porta-potty and changing room at the parking area. Once you get to the pools, its all lava rock. There is no sandy beach....More

Went a couple hours before high tide and the pools were crystal clear and teeming with a wide variety of fish. Four turtle sightings as well! Water shoes were a life saver. Plan to walk about 10 minutes from parking area through a private neighborhood...More

This was my husband and I's favorite place to snorkel on the island. The pools are protected from the ocean tides so the water is calm. I felt like I was swimming in fish tank with the amount of fish we saw. You park at...More

I've seen people there with young ones. You must take care walking over the lava with little ones. if they are old enough to snorkel by all means it is a great place to go

Check tropical snorkeling. Slack high tide will keep uou above the reefs and you won't need to put feet or hands down, which damages the coral. Use hard soled warer shoes or reef shoes, not fins. I felt really weird... More
