We got a cabin for a couple of nights and immensely enjoyed the quiet solitude. We slept quite well and the bathroom was spacious. The mess hall was certainly made for more than two people. Couldn’t get over how nice and clean all the facilities were. The forest was beautiful and a refreshing temp compared to where we live. The best part of our trip was talking story with Uncle Junior. He is the caretaker and does a wonderful job!! We didn’t expect to make a new friend, but so happy we did!!…

This was a nice place to visit. We did the short nature trail hike (I believe it's like .8 miles?) through the forest. To be honest I wouldn't go back. There are a lot nicer areas to visit and spend your time. The hike to Akaka Falls was way nicer than this (not even considering the falls, just the forest around it). Spend your time elsewhere unless you really need a break from driving. On the plus side there was literally no one there the whole time, haha.…

Kalopa State Recreation Area has some of the best mountain bike trail riding on the Big Island. Old growth fern rain forest, beautiful views and an easy ascent for a long downhill. Whole loop takes around an hour.

This is a great stop along the Hamakua Coast. Access is via a rather windy, but well-marked, paved road with some great ocean views along the way. The parking area is paved, and some of the trails are well developed. The location has a covered picnic area and bathrooms. The trails are easily walked, but can be overgrown. They provide a completely different view of Hawaii. The rain forest atmosphere and cooler temperatures are a welcome change of pace. Walking the trails is relatively easy, as the elevation doesn't change much. The park won't blow you away, but free activities are always awesome!…

We followed the signs off the main highway to take a walk. The nature trail was well-marked and easy to navigate thanks to the white markings on the trees. It was a pleasant hike. The grounds and cabins look well=maintained.
