It’s 4 miles long but you can find a spot to spend the day at. It’s a 5-minute drive from downtown Hilo and a fluke that we even heard about it. Some narrow streets and one lane bridges But don’t let that stop you. Pull off if you can and try to find a pathway down but be careful a wrong step can get you badly injured or worse. We found the Onomea trails and it was beautiful. There was a Botanical garden but due to Covid it was closed. Plenty to see at the bottom where the waves were crashing in a small rock cove. We even saw 2 horseback riders emerge from the forest to walk in the small basin of water next to the cove.

This is a lovely drive along Highway 19. If you follow the highway north of Hilo you turn right between mile marker 7 and 8 and take the right turn that is marked ‘scenic drive.” We ended up at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. A well worth drive and stop.

This is a back country drive that has some good scenery including a waterfall. You can stop and shot the photo from the car or park a little ways away and walk back. Also tree lined residential areas are around also. Fun little diversion you would miss if you were on the main road. This also has Low Store on it.

I must say this was not what I expected. I was expecting a scenic drive along the coast but it was more residential than scenic. We did drive by a waterfall but could not stop to view it because it was on the opposite side of the street and there was no parking so we missed it. We did stop a a little shop for good smoothies, unfortunately this was the highlight of the route for us.

We just happened to stumble across this scenic drive and so glad we did. We did pull off the road which there wasn’t much space to, but we took the walk down to the botanical gardens area. You can only enter the gardens after paying at the botanical garden which is down the road. After seeing how pretty the spot was we wish we would have had more time to do the botanical gardens as well. There is a spot after walking down this path that is open to the public tho.
