If you're visiting and you enjoy a nice family beach with lots of sea turtles then this is your spot. Bathrooms and showers, plus BBQ areas and benches.

Decent snorkeling when the wind and waves are both down. Interesting historical site where a haole helped a local family survive a disease that swept through. Parking is somewhat limited but free.

If you want to see a black sand beach, this is the closest place near Hilo. The beach is small, to be sure, but it is black. And you can swim safely off this beach.

Folks bring their own without any hastle. Pick one up at the nearby Walmart. I did not notice any public barbie stuff.

I agree with the first two answers above. You don't need to worry about a tour bus, the local bus does run there, but not on Sundays. Just look up the bus schedule online. Or when you get to Hilo you can call the bus company... More
