105 reviews
Kealakekua Bay is known to have some of the best snorkeling locations in Hawaii. Board a trimaran and head out into the bay on this convenient excursion that includes snacks, bottled water, snorkel and safety gear, and reef-safe sunscreen. Great easy access beach’s many with good parking and yes turtles ... I counted six at this location on windy stormy later rainy day. At Richards beach walk past lifeguard station to area described by others. Wade through tiny outlet water to get up and close to turtles sheltering in this perfect cove Hilo side of island

Very popular with locals. Perfect to spend two hours alongside a beautiful lava coastline, explore tide pools, enjoy a black sand beach and see a lot of fish. Snorkeling was much better than I expected. Saw one turtle. Perfect spot to hit if you’re spending one day in Hilo.

I took my vacation to Hilo Hawaii to see waterfalls and volcano the Richardson beach for the sea turtles and the 2 ladies in the thong bathing suits, that beach is more for the people that live there.

Quite a few tropical fish. Not as good as Hanauma Bay on Oahu or South Pacific islands with warmer water, but VERY convenient to the Hilo cruise ship port if that's how you arrive in the area. TRAVEL TIPS: Rent a car from off-airport locations for a good deal and if you want to also see more sights in the area. Hertz provides a free shuttle from the Cruise Ship Dock. Download GyPSy Guide tours on your smartphone (like a tour guide in your car)... $10 for the Big Island, $25 for all the Islands. Leave your car key on deck at the Richardson Beach lifeguard station while you snorkel. The key won't work if you take it in the water. A wet suit makes the water temperature comfortable.
