Our first attempt was from the Volcano Nat. Park side. First a 4 miles gravel path walk and then 1 mile over rough uneven cracked lava, which is very risky and dangerous and even worse in the dark. Don't even try it!! Like many others who didn't and returned. Take the "easier" and more enjoyable way from the Hilo side... More

When planning the trip we had no idea that the lava would be flowing. This was a once in a lifetime experience for me. There is a four mile hike or bike ride to the start of a short rugged trail to the viewing area. If you are not in shape (like myself) rent a bike. We stopped at the... More

Only place in the state to see an active volcano building more island layer by layer. You must go to see this natural phenomenon, you will not be disappointed. Remember to see the lava after sunset to see the magnificent glow of Pele's cauldron.

While on a cruise from Vancouver to New Zealand we stopped in Hawaii. While in Hilo, we had the opportunity to visit the Volcano National Park through a ship tour, but as we sailed away from the island, the captain decided that given the time, he would take the ship as close as possible to the lave flow to give... It is something worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. Something you can not miss if you come to Hawaii, just unforgettable, very impressive

6 hr excursions off a NCL cruise ship..... A lot of things to see and learn for such a short time. To overlook a huge crater still venting steam with lava flaring up is not something you see everywhere. Jaggar Museum very nice. The bus drive thru lush forests and then opening up to lava flows. Bus stopping and walking... More

You have to walk 7 miles to the lava activity and 7 miles back about 2 hours each way if not going with a child. The best time is arriving at the lava at dusk. You can then take some pictures of the glowing lava while there is still light and then when it is all dark, you can see... More

The Lava or magma if you will is traveling now in tubes again more Easterly down into what was once the Royal Gardens subdivision before it burned down in the 1970's, there may be an opportunity for above ground viewing opportunities in the near future down south of Kalapana.

Unfortunately, the lava flow was so far away from the visitor center that we were unable to enjoy the spectacular views we've seen on TV programs. Next time we travel, we will take the helicopter tour.
