About
This historic 1925 movie theater in downtown Hilo reopened in 1999 after being closed for 17 years. Our Mission is to revitalize, restore, and sustain the Historic Palace Theater as a venue that will educate, entertain, and inspire our diverse community. The Palace opened in October 1925 with the Silent Film “The Son of Zorro” Starring Douglas Fairbanks. Since then the Palace Theater has shown many types of films including Festivals, Documentaries, Independent, Sleepers, Art House, Academy Award Winners, Silver Screen Classics & still even shows Silent Films accompanied by the Palace Organ. But the Palace is a lot more then just a movie theater. Many Famous Musicians & Music Festivals, for example, have preformed here, covering a large array of music. Classical, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Electronic, Hawaiian & many other Traditional World Music acts. Live Theater, Musicals, Ballets & Halaus have also graced the Palace stage. Not to mention private parties and Hilo’s Special Events May Day Lei Day, Black & White Night & Chinese New Year. This Historical Theater has been in the hearts of many for almost a century, and we hope it will become a treasured memory for you as well. It’s through volunteered time & charitable donations that restorations & operations are possible, so that the Palace can continue entertaining the people & visitors of the Big Island for many more years.

A Blast from the past with the Local High schools Jazz Band concert.
Feb 2019
A multi-use two-story theatre built by Architects Davis & Fishbournein in 1925 in the Beaux-Arts style, with a parapet and balustrade running along the top of the building. It closed for a while due to lack of public support, but in 1998 it reopened as an art house, with a restored lobby and cafe serving refreshments during events. The wonderfully decorative proscenium frames the stage, making it visible to all the theaters seating. Our seats were a little to the left of the stage and with the sloped floor everything was in perfect view. As it was local High school jazz bands performance, and they were very good. There is a large Wurlitzer pipe organ in the theater, but it was not use at this performance.

TIP: Check out the theaters schedule of events, you might be surprised to see who plays here.

Not air-conditioned, best in the winter to go see a movie. Very impressed with the variety of films at The Palace.

As Cinema Used To Be
Mar 2019
Located on a side street just off the ocean from it downtown Hilo, this cinema is like stepping back in time. It may lack state of the art surround sound however it more than makes up for this in character. The location also offers special artistic events from time to time.

The cashier was friendly and the whole experience was delightful. There are discount prices for seniors and students.

Just do it
Sep 2017
If there's a movie here, do it. It's a wonderful piece of history and the theater is small but good. There's a lot of history here, I highly recommend exploring the downstairs area and it's old styled

Silent movie night not to be missed
Sep 2017 • Couples
If you happen to be in Hilo when the Palace Theatre is running a silent movie night, treat yourself to a great experience and go.

The original score is played live on the pipe organ, so it is just like it would have been almost 100 years ago when originally screened.

The players enthusiasm and skill brings an already great movie to life.

We saw The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Lon Chaney Jr..

It was a great night out in downtown Hilo.

What An Absolute GEM!
Jun 2017 • Couples
We are often in Hilo but it seems never when anything is going on at the Palace. This time we found an actual movie to go see! The Hero staring Sam Elliott. (Aside, terrific movie!) I was like stepping back into the past. I watched Saturday morning serials and cartoons here back in the 50's. What a trip! Muscle memory took us right to the seating area where I sat for these Saturday morning adventures. A double feature and cartoons for 25 cents. What a deal!
The old girl is in need of some work despite the massive efforts that have already been poured into the space. Next on their list it seems is air conditioning.
Definitely worth a stop even if you're not reminiscing.

Historic Theatre Buffs -- Take in a performance
May 2017 • Friends
Hilo community members have made a concerted effort to restore this 1920's movie palace in order to offer both movies and live performances at this landmark building. The building offers architectural features which were well ahead of their time such as "stadium seating" and excellent natural acoustics. I attended a performance by ULTIMI, a vocal ensemble of three tenors and was astonished at the tonal quality that the space offered. The performers brought their best and the theatre gave their voices premier staging.
An added feature of this lovely venue is the snack bar which offers the usual movie fare at reasonable prices.
While the upgrades are ongoing, visitors should be aware that as yet the theatre does not have central air conditioning. A fund drive is working to accomplish this modernization in the near future.
While visiting Hilo Town, definitely include an evening at the Palace, for years the "grandest theatre of all the neighboring islands."

Great old place
Jan 2016 • Solo
Very nice to see such a beautiful old theatre, really beats the modern no character place. Still need lots of work but the committee will get there in time. It will be something special when it gets finished

A Great Concert at a Historic Theater
Feb 2016 • Couples
We went to see the Makaha Sons concert at the theater and really enjoyed the concert. We are great fans of the Makaha Sons and to see them in person really made our visit worthwhile. The Palace Theater is a very old theater and probably in need of some improvement, but it would take a lot of generous help to improve the theater. However, I don't feel the theater should be modernized too much, some things are best left alone. We enjoyed the concert very much, but the only negative thing about the concert was the number of people using their cell phones during the concert. The lights from the cell phones were very distracting. Before the concert began everyone was told to turn off their cell phones, but did they listen, NO! These people with their cell phones on were not young kids or young people in their 20's or 30's. These were mostly retired people or people in their 40's, 50's and up. It was very annoying, but we made it through the concert and enjoyed it anyway. Would love to see the same concert again and visit the theater.

Came here to watch Kuana Torres Kahele
Jan 2016 • Couples
We were staying with friends in Hilo. They got tickets for us to see Kuana Torres Kahele at the Palace Theater. He as helping them with a benefit to help raise money for the continued upkeep and upgrading they are doing.
This is a wonderful theater. They have concerts and show movies. A nice lobby.
Right now they hand out fans for "air conditioning" but they are working on the real thing.
It still needs work but is a lovely place to see a concert.
If you are in Hilo, check out what they are offering for concerts and other events.
