In remote, jungle covered hills on the Pacific coast, The Ara Project, a conservation NGO dedicated to the survival of Costa Rica's two macaw species is working to breed and release young birds into areas where they once flew free. Guests can book tours of the Punta Islita breeding and release centre where they have the opportunity to view released Scarlet macaws in the wild and up close and meet some of the Great Green macaws kept for breeding. Tours run for an hour and aim to inform guests of the project's work, the plight of these birds in the wild and what we can all do to help them. Tours are by RESERVATION ONLY at 4pm, please book by email at least 24 hours in advance.

This is a must-do if you are in the area.... everyone that we've ever brought to see the lapas love it. Six of us visited this month. (Ms.) Harry does a great job with the tour, she was also there last March 2015 when we visited (visits were closed in December when we were there for a short time while... More

We visited this place a few days ago and it was very cool to see Macaws in the wild (the scarlet ones at least). They have green ones that are very endangered so they are kept in cages and released on the other side of the country. They charge $20/person to enter and that is fine if some/most of the... More

Thank you Kyle for your message. We are very glad to read you enjoyed to see our Scarlet Macaws flying free! Having our birds come back for a little afternoon snack is a great opportunity for our visitors to admire these magnificent birds from up close and take some great pictures. 100% of the donations that are made during this... If you love nature and birds you will be thrilled by the up close opportunities with Scarlet Macaws. They were in trees and all around so close even though they're flying freely. There must be 30 that were around us on the paths and food area. The vet guide talked about the birds and their current condition in Costa Rica... More

Visited the Ara Project whilst staying at Hotel Punta Islita. The project is a rehabilitation project for the Great Green and Scarlet Macaws both species of which are on the endangered list. The project has a breeding program to release young parrots back into the wild.It also keeps (with a large degree of freedom) some parrots that cannot fend for... More

This was the most amazing visit to see the Great Green Macaws in Manzanilla on the Caribbean Coast. You have to make a reservation in advance; they give tours between 4-5pm. You not only see macaws but toucans too! It is heaven on earth. Please create a page specifically for this location! We will be back next year to support... More

We visited while staying at Hotel Punta Islita which is a 5 min ride away. The Ara Project takes in parrots that have been confiscated, and/or have special needs of some sort. They are breeding and releasing parrots back into the wild. We saw both captive green macaws and many wild scarlet macaws. A wonderful and worthwhile experience!

Get up close with the beautiful scarlet macaws of Costa Rica! The ARA project is a non-profit organization that works to assist in the increase of the scarlet and green macaw population in Costa Rica. In order to attend you are required to make a $20/per person donation. Believe me, the $20 is well worth the cost of admission -... More

This fantastic conservation project does short tours at feeding time, and is _really_ worth a visit if you have the means to get here. Some of the birds are kept in large cages, but others are free to roam around the site, and are present in very large numbers. We loved our visit here and were welcomed and expertly guided... More
