We enjoyed this art studio/school tucked in the woods during the October 2016 art crawl. We were able to watch a wood carving class in session in addition to walking a small section of the grounds. Impressive art of all kinds on display and for purchase. Beautiful environment that lends itself well to creativity. Many areas outdoors to sit and... More

We stumbled upon this place on accident and we were pleasantly surprised! The location and buildings were outstanding. Our favorite place was the little getaway cabin right on the cliff, SOOO COOL!

I visited The Clearing with some friends on a Saturday in October when their classes were not in session. We walked around the grounds (which I found very lovely,) before taking a short hike and finally finishing up the the main office / visitor center where I learned a bit about their founder and their history. One of my friends... More

I've attended a week long Naturalist class, mushroom identification and a wood-turning class at the Clearing School. The variety structures used as classrooms on the grounds are buried in deep woods with some dating as far back as 1935. The classes offered vary over a wide range of subjects to include wood-working, painting, weaving, writing, singing, classes involving the different... More

Summary - I sought out The Clearing because I love creating, wilderness, and Quiet in the Muir, Robinson Jefferson, Ansel Adams, et al, manner. The grounds are simply beautiful and reflect the founder's wishes. The food is not restaurant-y food; it is delicious food served family style as you would have with family and friends. The common buildings are beautiful... More

We stop at this amazing sanctuary every time we are in the area. Make sure to allow a couple of hours for the guided tour on Saturday or Sunday which includes the interesting story about the Clearing's founder, Jens Jensen, and a beautiful hike along the cliffs of the bay.

This is such a unique and fabulous place that it is hard to find the right words to explain. The setting is peaceful, quiet, beautiful with many area to hike and explore. The food is soon good that one almost needs to diet before and after a visit or take long hikes everyday. The classes have always been done well.... More

My husband and I have been taking engaging classes at The Clearing for several years. We are always excited to arrive knowing our week will be a highlight of our year. On the last day we hate to leave new friends made, the lovely staff, the care and comforts provided, and the natural beauty of the setting. This splendid place... More

A week at the Clearing comes with quality instruction in a variety of arts and folk arts in a spectacular setting with simple but comfortable lodging and wonderful food including homemade bread and desserts. Conceived of and designed by Danish archictect Jens Jensen, the Clearing preserves a reverence for nature while expanding your world view, skill set and sometimes your... More

The Clearing is a Folk School on 110 acres on a bluff overlooking Green Bay. The Clearing was started by Jens Jensen, a famous landscape architect, one of the first in the 20th century to landscape with native plants rather than exotic species. Jensen was also a partner on projects with Frank Lloyd Wright on occasion. Students arrive on Sunday... More
