Our family loves this (mostly vertical) hike. You will get winded. Stop and take in the view, as it's amazing! I have seen eagles fly overhead while on this trail. The actual "balanced rock" is NOT located at the top of this trail; you can stop and see it off the right side of the trail. Watch for the signs... More

This trail goes up for what seemed like forever. You hike up a rock "staircase" on the side of the cliff to unbelievable views. The balanced rock is worth the climb. I took my dog and he did quite well

Tough trail to get here but worth it-- about 1/2 mile straight up over huge rocks on a sort-of stepped trail. The view is amazing. I don't like heights but somehow I push myself to do this thing at least once a year. I love this park!

I look forward to this hike every time I go to Devil's Lake. I have a tiny issue with heights so I always hike up the trail rather than coming down it. If you don't like heights, stay away from this one. I have family members that crawled up it on hands and feet because it scared them. Careful Please... More

Like others have said, this trail is mostly steep, narrow rock steps. Definitely challenging, but manageable even for beginner hikers, and the views and the scenery are amazing. Take lots of water and a snack. The "trail" is rocks that are very steep. Take your time and stop along the way to enjoy the views. Be careful you don't miss Balanced Rock, because it's easy to do. This trail allows you to see balanced rock and the much more interesting formation "the devil's doorway". Also you will get to see a great view of Devils Lake. Very difficult trail. Lots of climbing. It is like climbing stairs. There are some very nice views along the way. Make sure you wear good shoes.

Don't let this short trail fool you...its not an easy hike. When you get to the top though its an awesome view of Devils lake and the surrounding Baraboo Bluffs.

First, I'd like to say the trail itself was a bit challenging and well worth it if your intentions are to hike and you can careless about the attraction ('balanced rock'). Don't under estimate the .04miles it claims to be. It took us 45mins to climb it (with frequent slow downs for hikers to pass through since the path is... More
