Your journey begins at Wappocomo Station, situated next to a charming homestead and a sprawling view of the mountains. Enjoy the sounds of vintage diesels as they lead you through beautiful pastures and farms dating back to the 1700s. As you wind along the South Branch of the Potomac River, you’ll enter a visually-striking gorge known as the Trough. One of the most scenic spots along the South Branch, the Trough is home to American bald eagles.

All excursions are round-trip and include narration. A concession car is available to purchase snacks and drinks. Sorry, no smoking, pets, or alcoholic beverages permitted.

We took a Saturday afternoon in late September to do this excursion. The weather was just right. The fall foliage was beautiful. The three hour round trip train ride was just long enough to enjoy the countryside looking for eagles. While traveling along the South branch of the Potomac River we were fortunate to get to see 13 eagles. Some... More

We were able to take train ride with other family members. We were in the dining car. We had lunch while on the ride. The food was okay. Need to upgrade the quality of the food and had a few more options on the menu. Train ride is about two hours. They narrate while the train ride is moving past... More

We took the fist class train ride it was overcast and rainy, Eagles weren't flying much but you could see them in trees it was beautiful and the staff was awesome. one of the best prepared chicken dinners I've had especially made in that quantity. You could tell everyone cared about making the trip enjoyable for all.

This is one of the most well operated, well organized excursion railroads I ride and I ride them all over the country and beyond. Club Car service is beyond First Class and the price to ride is most reasonable. Can't wait for my next visit.

We made our reservations online with a 5.00 handling fee per ticket. Each ticket was $50.00 to start with. The price on the ticket was for a 3 hour train ride. Only one side of the train had a view most of the time. They asked that everyone switch sides of the train on the return trip so all would... More

We traveled 3 hours from Baltimore to ride the Potomac Eagle. It was worth the trip! The train is a 1940's vintage locomotive and cars; our seats in the club car (that's an up-charge, but worth it) were nicely restored and very comfortable. The large windows allowed us a great view, and for those who wished to go to the... More

We went on the train with a group of 10 people. It was relaxing and peaceful. Very nice train ride. The workers were very friendly. The conductor was very friendly! The snacks were good. We got to see about 4 eagles. I would recommend riding in the Gondola Cart when it becomes available. It was the highlight of the trip!... More

The train ride through "The Trough" was a perfect way to enjoy the fall foliage. Chugging along we past numerous house ruins and a few well restored homes from the 18th century. The staff were super friendly, many who had been there from the start some 26 years. But the BEST bit was the chili! I got some nachos for... More
