The biggest problem we had associated with visiting the refuge was the planning phase. The published maps aren't accurate. The road (Steamboat Slough Rd) along the river no longer goes through due to a washout. Also, it was impossible to find the Center Road trailhead from the Refuge office (though we did see deer chomping on fallen apples from trees),... More

We stopped and read some of the signs. Looked for deer. There were none visible, even though there are supposed to be hundreds of them here. We did not take the "trail" which was actually a perfectly good road that had been blocked to vehicles. Silly. There seems to be a lot of money spent (wasted?) "managing" this patch of... More

this a flat old road that has no signage, places to sit or interesting views. very little wildlife. If you are bored and want to go for walk this is it. Careful one road that use to take you to the trail head is now closed.

It was fun to see the Columbian White Tailed deer and learn of the project to help that species repopulate. The park rangers were extremely helpful and informative. Visiting at different times of day allows different opportunities for photography and viewing... More

We enjoyed a peaceful walk through the refuge. We would have preferred walking on a trail (it's a paved road), but the bird songs and pretty scenery were certainly worth the trip.

You can stop along the road and read an informational plaque or two. You can use your binoculars to search the fields for deer. But you probably won't see much wildlife at this refuge. We parked on the river side of the refuge and walked in along the graveled access road. Our crunching feet probably scared off most wild critters.... More
