The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

The architecture of this Black Friars Theater model is well worth the tour by the very enthusiastic Shakespeare scholars. And the many productions with bare bones staging and well prepared Shakespearean actors is quite impressive.

Excellent productions by a terrific ensemble repertory company of talented actors. They do everything! Act, dance, sing, play instruments and bring Shakespeare's play to life in the way they were done in the original Blackfriars Theatre. We have been there four times and always put...More

I actually went here a few years ago during my honeymoon. My husband and I watched a Mid Summer's Night. It was an excellent performance and sitting through the Shakespearean style (lights on/audience engagement) was spectacular. I would definently go back.

This renowned Shakespearean theater and company -- next door to a quality, historic small town hotel and conference center -- is the realized dream of a handful of cultural visionaries who saw the potential of creating a worthy theater home for these skilled players. Our...More

Cannot express fully how pleasantly surprised I was. I had a GREAT time, as did my whole family, including a teen. The play was funny, had music, interacted with the audience and they had a bar. My teen said she would like to go again...More

Not a Shakespeare fan but these actors made Shakespeare very enjoyable. Drive 4 hours to the show. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Building is very nice inside and out. The word quaint comes to mind.

Everything about this theatre company was excellent. We saw two different productions. One Shakespeare, one broadway musical. Both were wonderful. The actors work seamlessly together. They display great art in their work. It was flawless! And the theater is a remarkable copy of Shakespeare’s Globe!!

What a wonderful treasure this Shakespearean theater is! My husband and I saw Much Ado About Nothing with friends who had never seen a Shakespearean play. The performance exceeded my expectations, and it was wonderful to hear first time theatregoers laughing so hardily. Give yourself...More

This version was funny and the mixture with modern music was perfect. Would like to come back and see Sense and Sensibility. A real delight for adults. Older children were present. Hope they enjoyed My sister and I loved it..

We watched Much Ado About Nothing as part of a 59 person homeschool group. The play was fantastic and the acting superb. As with most Shakespeare, some of the humor was a bit lewd, but it wasn't excessive. We all enjoyed the performance immensely. Note:...More

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are

To be honest Tom it would depend on the play. I think it may be hard for the 5 year old to sit through a play. 10 and 12, I think would get a kick out of it. I would call the theatre and ask them what they suggest, they are... More
