One of the most picturesque bike pedestrian trails in the country is right here in Monterey, the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail, This trail was developed from the old Southern Pacific railroad served the sardine canneries in old Monterey. When the canneries closed, the railroad was abandoned, and transformed by the surrounding cities into an 18 mile paved trail for bicyclists... More

While on my walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I discovered the trail. It is a pedestrian trail for walking, running and pedaling. On the trail, I found wonderful views of the ocean and live sea life. I was lucky that day getting the warm sun to accompany me. I highly recommend this route to see Old Fishermans Wharf, Cannery... We rented bikes for a half-day ride along the trail. Lots of great stops, at Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, Lovers Point, etc. Easy to navigate the trail and street crossings were easy.

Wow! Such a nice walk! We started walking right outside the Monterey Bay Aquarium heading north on the trail which is along Ocean View Boulevard. Minutes after walking you could a group of seals resting on the shore next to the Hopkins Marine Station. As we continued to walk we were greeted by countless scenic views of Monterey with the... This trail goes practically right by my house. I usually ride the Fort Ord Dunes State Park trail (which parallels the MBCT) south to Sand City, then head back north to Marina on the Coastal Trail. Nice scenery, but the traffic on CA1 is noisy and tends to detract from the beauty to the west. Occasionally I ride all the... More

Nice bike trail along the highway. A few up and downs, but mostly flat. The trail continues through Marina (sketchy) and ends at Highway 1. About 15 miles one way from Pacific Grove.

On our trip we biked in many areas and preferred the views along the Pacific Grove coastal trail and 17 Mile Drive. This views on this trail seemed to be taken away by the city since it wasn't hugging the coastline. Maybe it gets better the further north you go, but if you don't have much time, stick with the... We used the free parking lot across from the entrance to the Naval PostGraduate School at Del Monte Ave and Cunningham Rd and walked all the way to the Aquarium, about 5 mile round trip, taking about 3 hours because we stopped and read all the markers along the way and took lots of pictures. A great history lesson and... More
