Visited Pontefract and headed for the castle which is only a short walk from the town centre and well signposted. It is at the present time having lots of restoration work done together with the building of a new larger visitor centre. We popped into the existing one to check if it was still ok to walk around the site.... More

I last visited Pontefract Castle 2 years ago, as part of an exploration of the geology and historic stone buildings of Pontefract – to identify potential field trip localities for groups of Geotourists from both Spain and Italy who have expressed an interest in visiting Yorkshire. Although I explored the ruins of the castle and had a good look at... More

I once went inside one of the private houses named Castle Chain which are adjacent to the actual Pontefract Castle ruins. it belonged to a couple of antique-dealer friends but they didn't live there long as it was said to be haunted and it did actually feel really spooky in there, particularly the upstairs gallery! Eeek. Anyway, this time round... More

At the Castle I was given a fantastic talk about the black monk who haunts the museum and gift shop, I also enjoyed a walk down the magazine and was able to have a glimpse into the olden days of pontefract. This is enjoyed because we were able to recreate how it would have been when people would've been down.... More

When you start to delve into the history of Pontefract Castle you start to realise what a major part it has played in English history. The ruins (thanks to the Roundheads) are just a shadow of what an imposing building it used to be. Anybody that is into English history can gain so much from a visit. There seems to... More

I didn't, the know this existed till I saw it on TV and there is a lot more of it than I has seen. It is under a lot of work and they are going to open a museum and visitor centre so that will be good when it's finished. Will have to come back then

Always well organised and reminds/ educates the future generations of the history of the castle and town. Sadly the years and other historical events have reduced its once boldness. But it still stands and is a testimonial to the town and it's people.

A massive new visitor's centre is being built and the walls are being fixed up so it will definitely be worth a visit when this is finished. We walked around and they had some activities for the kids happening. The sign posting isn't great and the car park was full of builder's vans which made it hard to park. I... More
