Amazing papercuts and folklore artefacts
Dec 2019 • Friends
Fabulous find. Opens in the afternoon. Small well stocked shop. Several floors showing Swiss papercuts, also known as decoupage. The craft is intricate and amazing with many examples and an explanatory video showing. Lots of examples of local trades and crafts including beautiful painted furniture

Hidden Gem in Plain Sight
Jul 2019 • Family
This brilliant Artisan and Folklore Museum is not really hidden, located as it is along the main street of the charming Vaudoise village of Chateau D'Oex. We went on a recommendation to see the fine collection of historic and contemporary Swiss Paper Cuttings. The Museum did not disappoint and offered a lot more besides. There is an audio tour in multiple languages but most signage is in the local German or French. There are four floors of incredibly well preserved and well presented examples of craftsmanship, ranging from woodwork, metalwork, blacksmithing, locksmithing, gunsmithing and carpentry. A magnificent array of Swiss Cow and Goat bells as well as Lacework, Beadwork and oil painting. There is an excellent Bookshop entirely devoid of the usual tourist tat. What a blessing.
Much recommended! And it is all free! Amazing for a Museum of this quality in Switzerland.

Surprising Gem
Jun 2018 • Couples
We walked past this little museum several times before going in, thinking it would be a quick in and out. It was marvellous- four stories of artefacts and folk art from centuries of Swiss history from the forge, to kitchens, to bedrooms and living quarters. The art collection of decoupage, carved furniture, drawings and the history of this area of Switzerland kept us occupied for ages. The entire collection needs a wider audience. Please, if you are anywhere near Chateau-d'Oex, make it a point to visit.

An Important Museum Spanning the early Cultural Life & Art in the Swiss Mountains Near Gstaad
May 2015 • Couples
Founded in 1922, a group of local people embarked on saving and sharing their heritage; a collection of Pays-D'Enhaut, covering a broad span of history, with its rich cultural heritage. Chateau d'Oex and the Pays-D'Enhaut were an isolated area in the mountains, and what one encounters in this wonderful Museum, is 'Time-Warp'. Rooms showing early life: a farm kitchen with period furniture and utensils; a bread oven dating from1665,etc; middle class furnished dining room; middle class kitchen; bedroom with painted furniture, etc.
Along with early documents and local paintings, etc; and the finest collection of early decoupages Swiss Scherenschnitte, by the two important local Swiss-Masters: Johann-Jakob Hauswirth (1808-1871) and Louis-David Saugy (1871-1953).
More than worth a visit.....
