I had a fun afternoon river rafting on the river Simme near Chateau-d'Oex. We began near Rougemont and travelled about 14km downriver back to where the bus was waiting. The two guides were very helpful and gave very clear instructions and a good safety talk at the start. Although the river level was quite low for my first experience in river rafting it was good fun.

You will probably arrive in chateau'd'ox on the Golden Pass train from Montreux which is a higlight and fitting prelude to this shangri-la of Chateau D'oex. The vollage lies in an open expanse of the flood plain of the Sarine River and was more or less discovvered by the English in the late1800's as a resort and spa town with remedial powers for those suffering from TB. Today, the village retains a sprinkling of refined English residents and visitors but the atmosphere is 100% Swiss rural. We have been to Cd'O many times over the last 10 years and its become our sanctuary; hiking, is the main summer activity centred on about 15 hills rising from the village, some accessible by cable car for scaling the high plateaux and mountain pastures. Cooled by the Sarine River, the air in summer is reviving and inspiring. In winter its a fine base for skiing the Gstaad valley but without the high costs of Gstaad accommodation. Immmensely friendly and welcoming to Brits, the village is peaceful and entertaining throughout the year and especiaaly in the last week of January for the international balloon festival. If you are planning a trip to the Bernese Oberland, Chateau D'Oex would not disappoint in any respect as your base. We love it and so do our children and guests.
